Quakes forwards, Alan Gordon and Chris Wondolowski, were named to the preliminary 35-man USMNT roster for the upcoming Gold Cup. CONCACAF revealed all twelve teams' preliminary rosters on Friday, with each roster to be trimmed down to a final 23-man version by June 27. The opening match for the Gold Cup is set for July 8.

The USMNT roster is very MLS-heavy at the moment, with players representing from the Houston Dynamo, Sporting Kansas City, Real Salt Lake, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders, LA Galaxy, D.C. United, Chicago Fire and Philadelphia Union.

Another great thing about the roster reveal? Middle names.

One Quakes Academy player and one former Quakes Academy player have been competing for the Red, White and Blue this past week.

JT Marcinkowski, a current Academy goalkeeper from Alamo, Calif., is with the U.S. U-17 men's national team competing in the Caspian Cup in Azerbaijan. The team opened the tournament in a dominating 11-0 win against Kyrgyzstan. Marcinkowski and the U.S. next face host Azerbaijan on Saturday.

Travel to the coast of France, and former Quakes Academy player and current Santa Clara University goalkeeper, Kendall McIntosh, started for the U-20 USMNT last night in their second match of the Toulon Tournament. After a well-fought battle, the U.S. ended up falling to Columbia 2-1. The Toulon Tournament is the last chance for the team to play together before they head to the U-20 World Cup in Turkey later this summer.

Anyone look familiar in this photo? What about number 5?

You guessed it. That's Quakes' Assistant Coach Mark Watson during his old Charleston Battery days. Prior to joining the Quakes in 2010, Watson spent 7 seasons with the Charleston Battery, 5 as a player, 2 as an assistant coach.

Tonight's U.S. Open Cup match will mark the first time Watson has been back to his old stomping grounds since moving to the Quakes.

The battle for the U.S. Open Cup begins tonight. Tune in to the live stream at 4:30 p.m. PT  for Quakes vs. the Charleston Battery.

The first-ever meeting for Charleston and San Jose is set for Tuesday, May 28 at 4:30 p.m. PT (watch the livestream here)

If the Quakes come out victorious over the USL Pro club, the team will face the winner of Real Salt Lake (MLS) vs. Atlanta Silverbacks (NASL). The Quakes will be away for either match-up, traveling to Rio Tinto Stadium or Atlanta Silverbacks Park on June 12.

The city of Watsonville celebrated their Soccer Appreciation Night with Watsonville youth and Earthquakes' midfielder Rafa Baca on Tuesday. Baca joined youth soccer players and their families to talk healthy eating, education and soccer.

Over 200 Watsonville residents came out to Ramsey Park for the event. Baca spoke for over thirty minutes to the crowd, reiterating the importance of staying in school.

Baca, 23, moved from Mexico to the United States when he was in elementary school. Not knowing English before he moved, he faced adversity acclimating to his new home. With persistence, Baca overcame the language barrier and eventually graduated from Amino Leadership High School in Inglewood, California. He was awarded the school's top Student-Athlete award before attending Loyola Marymount University on full scholarship.

Baca told the story of his past to inspire the young athletes to stay dedicated to the game and school. It wasn't all talk, though. Baca led clinics with the youth soccer players. To end a great event, he signed autographs, took photos and was presented with a gift from the Watsonville community.
