Since Chris Wondolowski sported his misspelled jersey on the Men’s National Team and scored a hat trick, he has been superstitious about carrying around that extra W for every game.
So of course, Quakes equipment manager Jose Vega surprised Wondo with an extra W on his kit when he returned to Buck Shaw. Superstitious it may be, but we do not doubt it.
Wondo led the quakes to victory over the Chivas by scoring the two goals of the game. Needless to say, ff it is working for him, we do not mind supplying as many extra W’s as he wants.
It was Shelby Humphrey’s birthday wish to attend a Quakes home game to see her favorite player, Chris Wondolowski.
To make this happen, she saved her allowance and any extra funds she could find since March of this year, naming it the “Wondo Fund.” Shelby ended up collecting the funds needed to purchase a ticket for her and was able to celebrate her special day with the Quakes at Buck Shaw Stadium. Shelby’s friend wrote a poem for her about her favorite Wondo.
It was a night to remember - not only was she able to see her favorite team dominate on the field, but after the game, Wondo signed the poem and posed for a photo.
Happy birthday, Shelby!
For Chris Wondolowski’s big return back to Buck Shaw Stadium after his world travels, he was not only welcomed home with open arms by fans, but also by his family. This was the first time that Wondolowski’s grandfather has seen him play at home in Santa Clara.
This was a special moment for both of them because his grandfather, who flew in from Oklahoma, was in attendance to see Wondo’s two goals for the 2-0 win over Chivas USA.

After Wondolowski's historic first-half hat trick, many soccer sites are ranking him higher and higher as this tournament goes on. From MLSsoccer.com, Greg Seltzer ranked Wondo with the highest score on the team with a 7.5. On ESPN.com, they ranked him a high 9, again the best on the team for his two diving headers to finish. On Pro Soccer Talk, he is climbing up the striking depth chart with an 8, again the highest rank on the team.
Clearly this is Wondo's time to shine, and he is not dulling out anytime soon. After that first half, Wondo came out sporting a new jersey with just as many "w's" in his last name as goals scored, which media and fans thought was very fitting.
