Earthquakes rookies JJ Koval and Tommy Thompson celebrated Read Across America Day by reading two of their favorite Dr. Seuss books to local elementary school students.

Koval visited Meadows Elementary School in San Jose and read The Cat in the Hat to 75 third graders. After finishing the book, the Stanford graduate had some time to show off his juggling skills, much to the delight of the students.

Rookie Tommy Thompson visited Baker Elementary School in San Jose and read the Dr. Seuss classic The Lorax to first graders. Afterwards, the homegrown player chatted and signed autographs for the kids.

Now in its 17th year, Read Across America Day was created by the National Education Association to promote literacy in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday.

Among many grassroots initiatives with youth players, the unique partnership also includes Chipotle sponsoring the first-ever MLS Homegrown player match at the 2014 MLS All-Star Game in Portland.

To kick off the partnership, Chipotle wants to reward you, too. Satisfy your hunger before you head to our MLS home opener vs. Real Salt Lake on March 15 - wear your Quakes gear to any local Chipotle, buy a burrito and get one for free.

In case you missed it, diplomats from around the world joined together in Half Moon Bay this week for the World Ocean Summit. The second annual Summit hosted by the Economist and National Geographic provides delegates the opportunity to better understand the risks brought about by ocean degradation and shape debate about governance of the ocean. In this forum, featured speakers discuss the global ocean sustainability initiative and capitalize on unique driven dialogue to make a difference. Among the featured speakers list included John Kerry (United States Secretary of State), HSH Prince Albert II (Principality of Monaco), Anibal Cavaco Silva (President of the Portuguese Republic), Leon Panetta (former United States Secretary of Defense) - just to name a few.

After the Summit, Portuguese President Silva invited around 40-local Portuguese-Americans to join him and his wife at the Fairmont in San Francisco. He wanted a chance to thank local leaders for their continued work in the Portuguese community. Due in part to his large initiative on organizing the San Jose Earthquakes Portuguese Heritage Night, Quakes Account Executive Taylor Amarante was among the 40 invited to the exclusive event. The President is keen on keeping young Portuguese-Americans involved in their heritage while keeping up with the evolving times. Silva was impressed with the work that the Earthquakes did to put on the 2013 Portuguese Heritage Night with over 1100 Portuguese fans that attended.

Being the world's game and uh, having mingled with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, the President had a few words to say about soccer and MLS. Of course, we had to give him some new Quakes swag to add to his collection too.

So, President Silva - feel free to rock that new Quakes scarf at our next Portuguese Heritage Night on August 16 when we host FC Dallas at Buck Shaw Stadium.

U13 Pre-Academy players Mario Rocha Jr and Brendon Foster are among 60 players in their age group to be invited for the boys id Program Training Camp in Portland. The camp will be held at the Nike World Headquarters and will feature the top players from across the country for four days of high-level training and off-field sessions from Mar 20-23. The invitation-only event will give both players the opportunity to compete in front of U.S. Soccer National Team staff, as well as some of the nation's best coaches. The age groups for the camp were selected to align with the scouting priorities for the U.S. Soccer U-14 National Teams.

Last year, JJ Foe Nuphaus was identified to participate with the 2000 id2 National Selection Team which leaves to Italy in 3 day. The id2 National Selection team will have matches against  the youth academy squads of ACF Fiorentina (March 4), Inter Milan (March 6) and Juventus FC (March 7).

ABOUT THE id2 PROGRAM
id2 Training Camps are invitation-only events that bring together the nation’s top male and female youth players for four days of competition, evaluation and fun. Here's something that should be music to your ears:

According to MLSsoccer.com's recent Opta Spotlight, the San Jose Earthquakes are the most prolific attack in MLS history.

The 2012 Supporters' Shield winners' 72 goals in a single season take the cake for the best goal-scoring team in Major League Soccer. Although the 1998 LA Galaxy scored a league-high 85 goals in 32 games, the guys over at MLSsoccer.com say that the game was vastly different in '98 compared to that of 2012. The early years of MLS saw a much more "open" game where goals came easily for the attack. The Galaxy may have seen more in the back of the net that year, but so did everyone.

The article goes on to show a strategy recently used in a Grantland piece, differentiating teams by measuring how far each total is from a given year's scoring mean. This allows us to compare high-scoring teams to the average for that year. As shown below, the Earthquakes' 72-goal campaign compared to the 45 goal average for 2012 put the team at 2.54 standard deviations above the mean. Simply put, the Quakes' 2012 attack may have been hard to pull off for any other club, but you know those Goonies. They #neversaydie.

There is a lot more to be learned from this week's Opta Spotlight. Check it out on MLSsoccer.com
