The Great Soccer Ball Relay

Just as an Olympic relay precedes the arrival of the flame at its final destination, The Great Soccer Ball Relay ceremoniously preceded the arrival of the soccer ball arriving at the Earthquakes inaugural match at Avaya Stadium!

  • The Great Soccer Ball Relay began its course on January 7 before traveling throughout the Bay Area, visiting Sacramento, San Rafael, San Francisco, Danville, Pleasanton, Oakland, Palo Alto and more.
  • The ball arrived in San Jose at Avaya Stadium for kickoff of the first match on March 22.
  • The route spanned a ten-week period and featured soccer clinics and community events each weekend led by Earthquakes Academy staff.
