Johnson scores in stoppage time for Jamaica
Earthquakes forward Ryan Johnson scored in stoppage time for Jamaica on Monday night in a 2-0 win over Guadeloupe in a Digicel Cup match. With the win, Jamaica won their group and clinched a spot in the semi-final, coming one step closer to defending their 2009 Digicel Cup triumph.
The Reggae Boyz grabbed the lead when Columbus Crew defender Shaun Francis scored in the 53rd minute, heading in a cross from New York Red Bulls midfielder Dane Richards for his first international goal at the senior level.
Johnson, who came on for Colorado Rapids forward Omar Cummings in the 65th minute ended the evening emphatically for Jamaica with his stoppage time finish. After a Guadeloupe free kick was struck into the wall, the Jamaicans came forward on the counterattack, with Johnson scoring his third goal in ten appearances for his country.
The 2-0 win, coupled with a 3-1 win earlier in the week over Antigua gives the Reggae Boyz six points through two matches. The final match of the group stage against Guyana is Wednesday, Dec. 1 at Riveire Pilote Stadium in Martinique.
