Wondolowski scores in 4-0 win vs. Cal Bears
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes continued their pre-season preparations as they defeated the University of California 4-0 thanks in part to three second-half goals at the Nutrilite Training Facility on Tuesday.
The match began with both sides working to put their imprint on the game, but the Quakes began to control the tempo as the first half wore on. This dominance came to a head in the 40th minute when a trialist picked up the ball off the foot of the Cal right back, drove into the box, cut back onto his right foot, and laid the ball off to an onrushing Chris Wondolowski who slotted the ball home at the near post from 12 yards out.
The Quakes had two more good chances to finish the first half but failed to convert. Omar Jasseh hit the right post from a tight angle in the 42nd minute. Jasseh also started a move right before the end of the half as he dribbled through a pair of Cal players before releasing a trialist down the left flank. He crossed the ball to the far post where Anthony Ampaipitakwong attempted a volley from close range that went high and wide.
The Quakes eventually increased their lead early in the second half through another trialist. After Cal had cleared away a San Jose corner, Justin Morrow collected the ball and sent a long ball forward to Bobby Burling. Burling flicked the ball on to a trialist on the left flank. He crossed the ball in where it was headed home powerfully by a trialist.
After 67 minutes, a trialist and Tony Donatelli exchanged passes in the midfield and Donatelli attempted a shot that was blocked. The trialist collected the ball at the top of the box and placed a right-footed shot in the far upper corner with the side of his foot.
San Jose closed out the scoring with seven minutes remaining as one of the trialists doubled his tally. Steven Beitashour, playing as a left back, made an overlapping run down the left flank and crossed low and the ball was nodded home from six yards away.
