Recap: Quakes top LA Galaxy 3-0 in Reserve League
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes cruised to a 3-0
Reserve League win against the LA Galaxy on Monday at the Nutrilite Training
Facility. Turkish trialist Sercan Güvenisik led the way with a
first-half brace while rookie goalkeeper David Bingham picked up a shutout in
his first appearance in 2011.
Güvenisik opened the scoring in the 15th minute, diving to head home service
from Tim Ward. Ward, playing in his first match of the season after recovering
from a preseason hamstring injury, hit a free kick from 35 yards out on the far
sideline after Galaxy defender Ryan Thomas was whistled for a handball.
David Frank set the table for Güvenisik’s goal in the 22nd minute. Frank lofted a cross over the Galaxy back
line with Güvenisik in full stride on a
smartly timed run. The trialist took a touch to his right and then calmly
placed a shot past Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Perk.
visitors created several quality chances in the second half, the best of which
came in the 52nd minute when Bryan Jordan beat his man on the right and whipped
a cross in front of the frame. Midfielder Hector Jimenez dove and got a head to
the ball at the far post, but directed his shot wide of the target.
forward Paolo Cardozo had two opportunities of his own. The shifty Uruguayan
was first to an Adam Cristman through ball, but sent his shot wide right in the
59th minute and beat Bingham with a shot from the middle of the area in the
68th minute only to see his strike knocked off the line by Brandon McDonald.
McLoughlin closed the match with a 30-yard right-footed blast that beat Perk to
the upper corner in the 91st minute.
Jose’s reserves will next hit the road to face the Portland Timbers on Tuesday,
June 21. The LA Galaxy will travel to Seattle for a match with Sounders FC on
Monday, June 13.
