Recap: Quakes top Dynamo 2-1 in Gen. adidas Cup
FRISCO, Texas – The San Jose Earthquakes opened Group A play at the Generation adidas Cup with a 2-1 win against the Houston Dynamo Monday night thanks in large part to a brace from Jesse Garcia.
The win was San Jose's first ever at the prestigious annual youth showcase and it came against a club that reached the 2010 semifinals. San Jose looked dominant, posting a 15-4 shot advantage.
Garcia broke through in the 22nd minute after back-heeling home a corner kick from Cristian Cruz to give San Jose a 1-0 lead. The Livermore native doubled his tally in the 46th minute to seal an Earthquakes win, cleaning up a loose ball in front of goal after Ryan Masch set Andy Perez up for a shot that Houston's keeper couldn't corral.
United States U-17 goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh came up with a pair of crucial 1v1 saves during the match. McIntosh returned to the Quakes' Academy earlier in July after starting for the U.S. at the U-17 World Cup in Mexico.
San Jose continues its Generation adidas Cup run against the Columbus Crew on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. PT. The Crew were 5-3 losers to defending champion D.C. United on Monday.
