TUCSON, Ariz. – The San Jose Earthquakes dropped their preseason friendly against the Colorado Rapids 1-0 at the Kino Sports Complex on Saturday.

Jamie Smith’s goal in the 66th minute decided the match. Andre Akpan picked the midfielder out at the far post to create the chance.

San Jose’s squad was largely composed of trialists as the club closed out a week of training in Tucson, Ariz. Included in the squad were 2012 regulars Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca and Shea Salinas, each of which went 45 minutes in their first appearance of the preseason.

The Earthquakes will return to San Jose Saturday evening for four days of training before departing again for Oxnard on Thursday, Feb. 7. The club’s next preseason game is Saturday, Feb. 9 against the Chicago Fire at UC Santa Barbara’s Harder Stadium (6 p.m. PT).
