New York Red Bulls Scouting Report

The New York Red Bulls (0-0-1, 1pt) return to Buck Shaw Stadium for the first time since San Jose (0-1-0) hosted the first leg of an Eastern Conference Semifinal on Oct. 30, 2010. The 2012 MLS Cup Playoff qualifiers boast a potent attack with Designated Players Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill combining with offseason acquisitions Juninho and Fabian Espindola. The Red Bulls were involved in a thrilling 3-3 draw against the Portland Timbers during Week 1. Real Salt Lake incomers Espindola and Jamison Olave accounted for the scoring as New York jumped out to a 3-1 lead on the road, but the Timbers tallied twice in the second half to rally for a draw.

Of Note

- Four players made their Earthquakes debuts in a 2-0 loss against Real Salt Lake on Sunday. That list included starts from former Toronto FC defender Ty Harden and former Portland Timbers forward Mike Fucito. Midfielder Cordell Cato, previously of Seattle Sounders FC, came off the bench in the 79th minute to make his first San Jose appearance while rookie Adam Jahn took the field for the first time in his MLS career in the 83rd minute.

- New York Red Bulls star Thierry Henry has yet to make an appearance in the Bay Area since signing with Major League Soccer in July 2010. He had an opportunity to play at Buck Shaw Stadium during the first leg of an Eastern Conference Quarterfinal on Oct. 30, 2010, but missed the game due to injury. He also did not suit up during New York’s 2-2 draw against the Earthquakes at Stanford Stadium on July 2, 2011.

- San Jose might have lost its first game of 2013, but history shows that the club is due for a rebound performance in Week 2. The Earthquakes are 4-2-2 all-time when playing their next match after losing a season opener. That stretch includes a 3-1-0 mark since the Earthquakes returned to MLS in 2008.
