Quakes keep early lead, defeat Timbers in first of Rose City Invitational

Portland, Ore. – The San Jose Earthquakes picked up a clean sheet and won their opening game at the Rose City Invitational 1-0 against the Portland Timbers at Providence Park on Sunday.

The Earthquakes found the scoreboard in the 26th minute thanks to an own goal from Portland’s Norberto Paparatto. Shea Salinas played a corner kick short to Sam Cronin, who whipped a cross toward the far post. Clarence Goodson won the ensuing header and nodded the ball across the goal face. Both Steven Lenhart and Paparatto rose for the ball, with the Argentinean ultimately knocking his attempted clearance into his own net.

The Earthquakes will continue Rose City Invitational action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Kickoff is 5 p.m. PT at Providence Park in Portland, Ore. with a livestream available at www.sjearthquakes.com.
