On the heels of a 4-0 rout of Eastern Conference leading New York, the Quakes will contest a return fixture with the New England Revolution on Saturday, May 15 at 3 p.m. PT. San Jose beat the Revs, 2-0, at Buck Shaw Stadium on April 17 after goals from Chris Wondolowski and Ike Opara.
The Quakes will travel to Gillette Stadium with a load of confidence after thrashing the New York Red Bulls, 4-0, with a man advantage for most of the match. Four different Quakes tallied on Saturday - Ryan Johnson, Joey Gjertsen, Wondolowski and Bobby Burling. Wondolowski has scored in each of his last four matches dating back to San Jose's win over the Revs.
Since losing to San Jose, the Revs are 0-3-1. After starting the season with two wins in three matches, New England has lost four of its last five. The squad has seen a slew of injuries. Six players were ruled unfit for play against the Columbus Crew on May 8, including Kevin Alston (hamstring strain), Edgaras Jankauskas (hamstring strain), Emmanuel Osei (leg infection), Matt Reis (shoulder/knee surgeries), Taylor Twellman (concussion) and Mike Videira (ankle).

Playing with a man advantage for more than 75 minutes, the San Jose Earthquakes used their good fortune to clip the Eastern Conference-leading New York Red Bulls’ wings and garner three points in a 4-0 win on Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. Quakes forward Ryan Johnson opened up the scoring -- and his 2010 account -- just before half. After a neat pass to the touch line from Johnson’s strike partner Chris Wondolowski, Convey sent a sublime, curling cross into the box. Johnson took only one touch and slotted it past New York goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul. The rout was on there from there, as the Earthquakes rattled off three goals after the break. Joey Gjertsen doubled the Quakes’ lead in the 54th minute with a low drive that Coundoul let slip by under his left arm. Wondolowski -- the Quakes’ surprise star in 2010 – followed with his fourth goal of the season in the 77th minute off a nifty San Jose buildup and a pinpoint cross from Ramiro Corrales. And defender Bobby Burling put an exclamation point on the night by nodding home a goal in the 85th minute off Convey’s corner kick, finishing off the rout.

Chris Wondolowski, starting in large part because three other San Jose forwards were sidelined by hamstring problems, scored his first goal of the season to put the Earthquakes ahead to stay in what would become a 2-0 win over New England. Ike Opara and Bobby Convey hooked up for the second consecutive week to provide the extra cushion as the Quakes bobbed above the .500 mark for the first time since being re-formed in 2008. Wondolowski scored in the 57th minute to break through for San Jose, which dominated possession for much of the evening in the absence of New England midfielder Shalrie Joseph. Joey Gjertsen fed Ryan Johnson, who turned and broke into the Revs’ penalty area. Once there, Johnson slipped a perfectly weighted pass between two New England defenders. Wondolowski, having beaten his marker, ran onto the ball and slotted it past Revs goalkeeper Preston Burpo. Opara’s goal looked similar to his tally in Chicago during the Earthquakes’ win against the Fire on April 10. Convey struck an inswinging ball that found the 6-foot-2 rookie open at the far post, where Opara headed it home.

Wondo Keeps Streak Alive With Four Straight
Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski remained hot this week, and is tied for third in the league in scoring after scoring for the fourth consecutive game last Saturday in the Quakes 4-0 win over New York. The Danville native became only the fourth player in franchise history to accomplish this feat; the other three being Paul Bravo in 1996, Missael Espinoza in 1996 and Ronald Cerritos in 1997. Both Bravo and Cerritos scored in five straight. Wondolowski scored the third goal of the match for San Jose last Saturday with a tap in from a great pass by captain Ramiro Corrales, which you can see here.
Johnson Opens Account for 2010; Sets Career High in Assists
2009 leading scorer Ryan Johnson (11 goals) opened his account for 2010 on a beautiful finish on the end of a Bobby Convey cross just before halftime last Saturday in the Quakes 4-0 win over New York. Johnson finished on the volley to the near post to give San Jose the advantage, and they never looked back. The Jamaican international also tallied two more assists, which gives him four on the season. His previous career high in a season was two, which was accomplished last season. Johnson assisted on both Joey Gjertsen’s goal in the 54th minute and on Chris Wondolowski’s 77th minute tally. Johnson played Ramiro Corrales through, and the captain then found Wondolowski for the tap-in. See Johnson’s first goal of 2010 here.
Gjertsen and Burling Score First Career Goals
Earthquakes midfielder Joey Gjertsen and defender Bobby Burling scored the first goals of their MLS careers last Saturday in a 4-0 win over visiting New York. Gjertsen scored the second goal of the match; getting on the end of a Ryan Johnson through ball and beating New York goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul. Burling added the exclamation point to the match, tallying the fourth Quakes goal via a Bobby Convey corner kick. Check out Gjertsen’s goal here and Burling’s header here.
Convey Posts a Playmaker
Earthquakes midfielder Bobby Convey continued his hot start to 2010, tallying three assists in the Earthquakes 4-0 win over New York last Saturday. Convey provided the service on the first goal of the night, and of the season for Ryan Johnson in the 44th minute, as his cross hit the Jamaican international perfectly in stride, and he finished to the near post of New York goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul. Convey also played a big part in Joey Gjertsen’s goal and served up the corner kick on Bobby Burling’s first career MLS goal. Convey now has five assists on his season; he only posted two all of last year. He is also just two behind his career high of seven in 2001 when with D.C. United.
Cannon Posts Third Straight Home Shutout
Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon posted his third shutout of the season on Saturday in San Jose’s 4-0 win against the Red Bulls. Cannon now has 71 career shutouts and 102 wins. The Quakes now have not conceded a goal in their last 306 minutes at Buck Shaw Stadium, which dates back to the 54th minute of the match on March 27 against Real Salt Lake. The Earthquakes club-record home shutout streak was ended on July 23, 2005 against the MetroStars by an own goal in the 32nd minute. San Jose’s streak reached 537 minutes. Earthquakes’ opponents had not scored at Spartan Stadium since April 23, 2005 when Kansas City’s Chris Klein found the net in the 34th minute of the Wizards’ 3-2 loss to the Quakes.
Quakes Continue to Roll at Home Against New York
The Earthquakes extended their home unbeaten streak to five games against the Red Bulls, dating back to the 2004 season, and they are 3-0-2 over that stretch after their 4-0 win on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Alvarez Set to Make 150th Appearance
Quakes midfielder/forward Arturo Alvarez will make his 150th career appearance in MLS if he plays on Saturday, May 15 against the New England Revolution. He has started 92 games, has scored 22 goals and notched 17 assists in his eight-year career.

Quakes forward Ryan Johnson will make his 75th career appearance in MLS if he plays on Saturday, May 15 against the New England Revolution. He has started 47 games, has scored 17 goals and notched seven assists in his four-year career. Those 17 goals have him in seventh place on the all-time franchise leaders list for San Jose. He trails Jeff Baicher by three goals for sixth place.

The Revs had not beaten the Quakes since July 22, 2000, until their victory on May 17, 2008. San Jose has outscored New England by a 61-42 all-time total. The Quakes have also lost just twice at Gillette Stadium, home of the Revolution, posting a 5-2-1 record there since 2002.

He also holds the team's all-time record for saves in a game with 12 on July 8, 2000 at Colorado.

Ramiro Corrales has the most appearances in franchise history with 173, has made 157 starts and has logged 13,956 minutes played as a member of the Quakes. Quakes Host Club Partner Tottenham Hotspur July 17
The San Jose Earthquakes will play club partner Tottenham Hotspur from the English Premier League (EPL) on Saturday, July 17 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The kick-off time will be announced at a later date. Season ticket holders should use their Bonus Game “B” ticket for the match. Tottenham Hotspur, also known as Spurs, signed a club partnership agreement in 2008 with the objective of creating a long-term bond between the two clubs. The relationship focuses on both soccer and commercial development by exchanging and implementing the best practices from both organizations. The partnership to date has seen Earthquakes technical staff visiting Spurs Lodge on numerous occasions, with the team using the Tottenham Hotspur training facility as a base for this season’s pre-season preparations.

The San Jose Earthquakes announced that individual tickets for all 2010 Earthquakes home games are now on sale. The Quakes significantly reduced prices for the 2010 season with prices ranging from $20-50. Tickets for the much anticipated 2010 campaign are available online at sjearthquakes.com or by calling 1-800-225-2277. The new, reduced prices for the 2010 season are as follows; Premier Midfield $50 per game ($60 in 2009), Center Circle $35 per game ($40 in 2009), Sideline $25 per game ($35 in 2009) and Goal View $20 per game ($22 in 2009).
