San Jose will return to action on Wednesday when the Quakes host the Columbus Crew at 7 p.m. in the last home contest before MLS takes a nearly three-week break for the World Cup.
Both the San Jose Earthquakes and Columbus Crew are looking for rebound performances after Week 9 losses. The Quakes fell 3-1 to visiting Toronto FC while the Crew dropped a home fixture to the MLS-leading Los Angeles Galaxy, 2-0.
The Crew were undefeated until the loss to L.A. Despite the loss, Columbus are still four-points ahead of second-place Toronto FC despite having played one less match.
San Jose had a four-game unbeaten, unscored-on streak snapped by Toronto FC. It was the first loss in the month of May and the second at home in 2010. The Quakes are tied for third-place in a highly-competitive Western Conference.

The Earthquakes look to bounce back with two games this week following a 3-1 loss on Saturday to Toronto FC. Toronto marched into Buck Shaw Stadium and collected three valuable road points against the San Jose
Earthquakes on Saturday night as Dwayne De Rosario grabbed a brace to put his team in second place in the Eastern Conference. De Rosario --introduced in the second half after just returning from Canadian National Team duty-- collected a long ball on a break away in the 66th minute and cooly slotted the game winner past Quakes keeper Joe Cannon. He also netted Toronto’s final goal in added time to seal the 3-1 victory. The tempo of the match turned in the 31st minute, when Toronto’s Chad Barrett opened the scoring. Barrett pounced on a header from San Jose defender Jason Hernandez that was intended for Joe Cannon and rolled a slow dribbler past him, who had come charging off his line. Toronto looked like it might run away with the game when De Rosario scored his first goal of the match after a long ball from right back Dan Gargan sent him on a one-on-one against Cannon. De Rosario ran past his defender and, with one touch, slipped the ball past Cannon to nab his seventh goal of the season. San Jose refused to give up, however, and kept the final minutes interesting. In the 76th minute, Corrales netted a header on a corner kick from Convey. That goal gave San Jose an extra boost in the final minutes of play and, in an all out effort to pull level, the home team switched to a five-man attack and proceeded to bombard Toronto’s back line for the rest of the match. Toronto's defense, behind Frei's command, held up the fort well and, with the game about to end, Cannon left his spot under the San Jose goal and joined the attack in a last-ditch effort to pull level. The move backfired, though, as the keeper slipped and hit the turf on the Quakes’ last possession of the match. De Rosario took advantage of the opportunity and scored his second of the match as he simply passed the ball into an empty net.

The visitors who walked away with a 3-0 victory, courtesy of second-half goals from Alejandro Moreno, Robbie Rogers and Adam Moffat. In a bid to generate more offense, Robert Warzycha brought on Emmanuel Ekpo and Moreno for Eddie Gaven and Jason Garey, respectively, and it took less than 10 minutes for both players to help put the Crew ahead. Ekpo's cross from the right wing was headed back across goal by Rogers to Moreno, who nodded home his fourth goal of the season from close range. Rogers doubled the Crew's advantage just four minutes after Moreno's tally. Rogers received the ball near the left hand corner of the box, and a hard tackle by Leitch looked to have killed the threat. But the ball fell fortuitously right back to the Crew midfielder, and he made no mistake with an authoritative finish into the upper corner. The double blow seemed to take the life out of the Quakes, and Moffat then capped off the night in the 87th minute, heading home Gino Padula's corner kick with the help of a deflection by the Quakes' McDonald.

Corrales Gets on the Board
Earthquakes captain Ramiro Corrales scored his first goal of the season on Saturday against Toronto FC. He drove home a header from a Bobby Convey corner kick. The goal was the 12th of his career and the first since he scored against the Columbus Crew on June 7, 2008.
Quakes Shutout Streak Snapped
The San Jose Earthquakes shutout steak was snapped in the 31st minute against Toronto FC on Saturday night. The streak, which started on April 24, ended at 394 minutes and is the third-longest in team history. The longest streak in franchise history is 459 minutes, which was done from Aug. 11 through Sept. 8 of 2004. The team also did not allow a goal in 399 minutes from July 19 until August 16 of 2003.
Convey Remains Near Top of Leaderboard
Quakes midfielder Bobby Convey continued his strong start to the 2010 season Saturday against Toronto FC. His corner kick in the second half was headed in by Ramiro Corrales for his sixth assist of the season. He is now one short of his career high for assists in a season. He notched seven in 2001 for D.C. United. He is currently tied for second in MLS in assists with Houston’s Brad Davis.
Best Month Since August of 2008
The San Jose Earthquakes rounded out their month of May with a 3-1-1 record, which is their most successful month since August of 2008, when they finished the month 3-0-1. San Jose conceded just three goals in the entire month, all of which came on May 29 against Toronto FC, and currently sit in a three-way tie for third place in the Western Conference.
Cannon’s Scoreless Streak Fourth Best in Franchise History
Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon held Toronto FC scoreless for 31 minutes before they snapped his shutout streak at 394 minutes with a goal by Chad Barrett. Cannon fell just short of his own franchise record of 410 consecutive scoreless minutes, and this year’s streak ranks fourth best behind himself from 1999-2000, David Kramer’s 399 minute streak from 1998-1999 and Pat Onstad’s 399 minute streak in 2003. Cannon posted four consecutive shutouts before the match on May 29 against Toronto FC during his streak.
Wondolowski Among MLS Leaders
Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski is currently tied for third with four other players in all of MLS in scoring with his five goals. Those five goals also tie his career high from last season when he split time with Houston and San Jose.
Alvarez Makes 150th Appearance
Quakes midfielder/forward Arturo Alvarez made his 150th career appearance in MLS on Saturday against Toronto FC when he came on as a halftime substitute. He has started 92 games, has scored 22 goals and notched 17 assists in his eight-year career.
Johnson Makes 50th Career Start
Quakes forward Ryan Johnson made his 50th career start in MLS on Saturday against Toronto FC. He has appeared in 77 games, has scored 17 goals (all with San Jose, which ranks seventh in franchise history) and notched seven assists (all with San Jose) in his four year MLS career.
Ring Makes First Career Start
Quakes midfielder Brad Ring made his first career MLS start on Saturday against Toronto FC and played 59 minutes. Ring had previously appeared in three matches and played just 51 minutes this season.
Leitch and Morrow Make Amway Global Kicks for Kids Appearances
Quakes defenders Chris Leitch and Justin Morrow each made appearances last week at local elementary schools (Morrow went to Luther Burbank and Leitch went to Terrell Elementary) as a part of the Amway Global Kicks for Kids program. The program, in its second year, helps teach local youth about the importance of a healthy diet and an active lifestyle. The players spoke at their visits about the impact a healthy diet and active lifestyle has had on their lives. They told the children that they could not be where they are today if it weren’t for healthy choices with their diets and exercise growing up. They also stressed that a healthy lifestyle is not only important for aspiring athletes, but for everyone. Students in attendance participated in question and answer sessions with the players and then played a game of “Head, Catch,” in which the students were supposed to catch the ball when thrown to them, and when the player yelled catch, they were supposed to head the ball. As the assemblies drew to an end, the defenders signed autographs, posed for photos and the Earthquakes staff gave each student tickets, donated by Amway Global, to see the Earthquakes play at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Nothing But Nets Buzz Tour Hits San Jose Wednesday
The Nothing But Nets Buzz Tour is coming to San Jose. Nothing But Nets -- a global, grassroots campaign to end malaria in Africa—and its country-wide bus tour are driving toward the global goal of ending malaria deaths by 2015 with interactive events for local residents to learn more about malaria prevention. The eco-friendly bus (running on waste vegetable oil and biodiesel) will roll into Buck Shaw Stadium on Wednesday, June 2 to join the San Jose Earthquakes in hosting an awareness event. Malaria kills a child every 30 seconds, and Nothing But Nets is working towards kicking malaria out of Africa. The Earthquakes will host the Columbus Crew at 7 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium that night. The Buzz Tour will visit its partners and supporters in more than 15 cities and working with Major League Soccer to host in-stadium events to raise awareness about malaria, in the lead up to the 2010 World Cup, which will be played in Africa for the first time. Ninety percent of malaria deaths occur in Africa, where a child dies every 30 seconds from a malaria infection. To leverage the enthusiasm around the World Cup, the UN Foundation and its Nothing But Nets campaign are teaming up with soccer stars and other malaria-focused organizations for a one-year campaign called United Against Malaria. History of the Quakes-Crew Rivalry
The Earthquakes and the Crew have had a strong rivalry in MLS history, playing twice in the playoffs and competing in a number of memorable games … In 2001, the Quakes eliminated the Crew from the MLS Cup Playoffs with two convincing wins, 3-1 and 3-0 en route to winning the MLS Cup … Columbus turned the tables on San Jose in 2002 by knocking the Quakes out of the playoffs with a pair of 2-1 victories that both came on goals in the final 10 minutes of the game …Quakes midfielder Ronnie Ekelund scored one of the best goals in league history against Columbus on Sept. 7, 2002. Richard Mulrooney lifted a free kick up for Ekelund, who half-volleyed a shot from 25 yards out into the upper corner. The Quakes went on to win 4-3 in overtime. That overtime win was the team’s only regular season overtime win in team history. The team went 1-1-26 all-time in regular season overtime games. The league eliminated overtimes for the regular season following the 2003 season.

He is now second all-time in saves (1,147), second all-time in shutouts (73) and fourth all-time in wins (103) in league history. For San Jose, Cannon is first in club history as a goalkeeper in starts (168), minutes played (15,291), saves (679), wins (65), and shutouts (43) and second in appearances (168), goals against average (1.33), and saves percentage (73.4). He also holds the team's all-time record for saves in a game with 12 on July 8, 2000 at Colorado.

Ramiro Corrales has the most appearances in franchise history with 176, has made 160 starts and has logged 14,225 minutes played as a member of the Quakes. He is now alone in second place in franchise history in starts, is third in all-time in club history for minutes played and ninth in assists with 21.
Quakes to Play Chivas USA in Sacramento June 12
The San Jose Earthquakes and Raley Field announced that the Earthquakes will host Chivas USA on Saturday, June 12 in the inaugural Sacramento Cup at Raley Field in West Sacramento. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT. The Earthquakes will make their second appearance in Sacramento in team history on June 12. The team faced CD Olimpia from Honduras in a CONCACAF Champions Cup match at a sold-out Sheldon Florin Community Stadium. Landon Donovan, Ian Russell and Jeff Agoos scored for the Quakes in a 3-1 win that moved San Jose into the quarterfinals of the Champions Cup. Ramiro Corrales is the only current Quakes player that appeared in that match on March 16, 2002. San Jose and Chivas USA have played 10 times with the Southern Californian squad holding a 4-2-4 series lead, including a 3-2 win on April 24 at The Home Depot Center in Los Angeles. The Earthquakes are 4-2-0 in 2010, while Chivas USA is 3-4-1. The June 12 match marks the return of soccer to Raley Field; the ballpark hosted international matches for three consecutive years 2006, 2007 and 2008, including a game between Preston North End (England) and Monterrey (Mexico).
Quakes Host Club Partner Tottenham Hotspur July 17
The San Jose Earthquakes will play club partner Tottenham Hotspur from the English Premier League (EPL) on Saturday, July 17 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The kick-off time will be announced at a later date. Season ticket holders should use their Bonus Game “B” ticket for the match. Tickets are on sale now and range from $20-$50 and can be purchased by calling (800) 225-2277 or by logging on to sjearthquakes.com. Tottenham Hotspur, also known as Spurs, signed a club partnership agreement in 2008 with the objective of creating a long-term bond between the two clubs. The relationship focuses on both soccer and commercial development by exchanging and implementing the best practices from both organizations. The partnership to date has seen Earthquakes technical staff visiting Spurs Lodge on numerous occasions, with the team using the Tottenham Hotspur training facility as a base for this season’s pre-season preparations.

The San Jose Earthquakes announced last week that their game that was scheduled for Saturday, September 18 has been moved to Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7:00 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The full 2010 Earthquakes schedule is available on www.sjearthquakes.com.
Quakes Individual Tickets
The San Jose Earthquakes announced that individual tickets for all 2010 Earthquakes home games are now on sale. The Quakes significantly reduced prices for the 2010 season with prices ranging from $20-50. Tickets for the much anticipated 2010 campaign are available online at sjearthquakes.com or by calling 1-800-225-2277. The new, reduced prices for the 2010 season are as follows; Premier Midfield $50 per game ($60 in 2009), Center Circle $35 per game ($40 in 2009), Sideline $25 per game ($35 in 2009) and Goal View $20 per game ($22 in 2009).

The San Jose Earthquakes have one partial plan for the 2010 season still available, the Pick 6 Plan. With the Pick 6 Plan you can select any six Earthquakes home games at Buck Shaw Stadium during the 2010 regular season.
