The San Jose Earthquakes return to Buck Shaw Stadium for the first
time since the World Cup break on Saturday, July 3 when they host D.C.
United at 7 p.m. PT (TICKETS). The Earthquakes are coming off a well-earned 0-0
draw against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on Friday, June 25.
Saturday’s match will be broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet California,
1220 KDOW (in English) and 1370 KZSF (Spanish). The first 5,000 fans in
attendance on Saturday will receive an Earthquakes drawstring backpack
courtesy of Xfinity.

The San Jose Earthquakes and Real Salt Lake battled to a scoreless draw
at Rio Tinto Stadium as both teams returned to action in the first MLS
match following the break for World Cup play. The goalkeepers were the
stars of the show and earned the shutout. Jon Busch made his first start
for San Jose. Also debuting for the Quakes was newly acquired Sam
Cronin, who was inserted into the starting lineup in a central midfield
role. San Jose had an early chance as defender Nat Borchers misjudged a
ball, and striker Chris Wondolowski was able to get behind him. However,
Rimando was able to deal with his shot from distance. The visitors'
best chance of the opening half came in the 34th minute. The sequence
was started with a poor back pass by Andy Williams that gave the
Earthquakes a corner kick. Bobby Convey’s delivery into the box was a
good one, glancing first off of Ned Grabavoy’s head, and then
ricocheting off of Borchers. Rimando used a reflex save to clear the
ball off the goal line. Both teams continued to spread the field and
attack in the second half. Real Salt Lake’s best chance of the match
came in the 53rd minute when Saborio put a short cross to the far post.
Espindola was there but his deflection failed to put the ball on goal as
it rolled tantalizingly across the goal mouth. San Jose had two quality
chances late. The first came on a counter, with Convey sliding a ball
to the left to second half substitute Cornell Glen, who was unmarked.
Rimando foiled the Trinidadian with another acrobatic save. The last
real scoring opportunity came when Earthquakes substitute forward Javier
Robles took a long chance from 30 yards out. The dipping ball appeared
to fool Rimando who was able to get a glove on it at the last minute,
preserving the scoreless draw.
Last Game vs. D.C. United
Earthquakes 2, D.C. United 1; September 27, 2009; RFK Stadium;
Washington, D.C.
The San Jose Earthquakes ended a 20-match road winless streak, defeating
D.C. United 2-1 on second half goals by Ramon Sanchez and Ryan Johnson.
Johnson was dangerous the entire match for San Jose, additionally
scoring two goals that were taken away on refereeing decisions before
netting the game-winner in the 73rd minute. Jaime Moreno put United into
the lead in the 26th minute, but Earthquakes midfielder Ramon Sanchez
stroked home a perfectly taken free kick just before the hour mark for
the equalizer. D.C. broke through in the 26th minute as Moreno stepped
in front of Jason Hernandez near the top left corner of the 6-yard box,
turned, and powered a left-footed shot through Andrew Weber to give
United a 1-0 lead. An injury to goalkeeper Josh Wicks meant Milos Kocic
was called upon for D.C. With Kocic's feet still cold, the Quakes
finally got one that counted on a perfectly bent free kick from Sanchez
to equalize at 1-1 in the 58th minute. Julius James took down Johnson in
a prime location some 26 yards from goal straight on and the Salvadoran
midfielder made them pay, curving the left footer over the wall and
away from the flat-footed Kocic. Johnson's hard work was finally
fulfilled and Yallop's decision on Arturo Alvarez proved fruitful as the
two contributed to the Quakes go-ahead goal in the in the 73rd minute.
Alvarez collected a poor United clearing attempt and though stumbling
for a fleeting second, got off a decent left-footed shot. The ball was
deflected onto the crossbar by United defender Clyde Simms, with Kocic
out to cut down the angle. Alvarez’s shot caromed directly to Johnson on
the left side some 11 yards from the goal, who headed it into the
vacated net for his ninth goal of the season to make the score 2-1.
Corrales perhaps saved the game for the Quakes in the 82nd minute,
clearing a Pontius bicycle kick off the line from 10 yards out.

Xfinity Clinic Series Kicks Off this Week
The Xfinity Clinic Series, a series of five free clinics open to the
public and run by Earthquakes players and UK International Soccer Camps,
kicks off this week. The clinics give youth soccer players the
opportunity to learn passing, shooting and dribbling skills from some of
the top professionals along with some of the most respected coaches
from the club’s Development Schools. The first clinic will take place on
Thursday, July 1 at Ocala Middle School in San Jose. Other dates and
locations are; Thursday, July 29 in Palo Alto, Thursday, August 12 in
Hayward, Thursday, September 9 (location TBD) and Thursday, October 14
(location TBD). Each clinic will last from 6–8 p.m. PT. Registration for
the clinics starts at 5:45 p.m. and each clinic will close with an
autograph session for all participating players. Four Earthquakes
players will appear at each clinic. To sign-up for any of the clinic
dates, visit the San Jose Earthquakes office at 451 El Camino Real,
Suite 220 in Santa Clara and complete a registration form, fill out the
registration form online at sjearthquakes.com, pick up a registration

participants will be registered on a first-come-first-serve basis. Each

Jon Busch Debuts and Earns Clean Sheet
Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch made his regular season debut on
Friday, June 25 in a 0-0 draw with defending MLS Cup Champion Real Salt
Lake and earned a clean sheet. Busch made one save, but cut out multiple
crosses and was key in the shutout. The 2008 MLS goalkeeper of the year
had appeared in only exhibitions up until last Friday, his most recent
appearance being a Sacramento Cup victory on penalties on June 12
against Chivas USA. Busch becomes the first goalie other than Joe Cannon
to record a shutout since the Earthquakes returned in 2008.
Sam Cronin Debuts
Quakes midfielder Sam Cronin, the second overall draft pick in the 2009
MLS SuperDraft, made his Earthquakes debut on Friday, June 25 against
Real Salt Lake in the Quakes’ 0-0 draw. Cronin was acquired on Monday,
June 23 from Toronto FC in exchange for allocation money. Cronin has now
appeared in 34 games in his career and scored one goal and notched five
assists. Cronin had a standout rookie season in MLS in 2009, starting
26 games and logging 2,363 minutes in central midfield. He scored his
first goal against the New York Red Bulls in a 2-1 win in June and also
recorded four assists for the season.
Wondolowski Among MLS Leaders
Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski is currently tied for third in scoring
in MLS with Conor Casey of the Colorado Rapids, Kei Kamara of the Kansas
City Wizards, Sebastien Le Toux of the Philadelphia Union, and Marco
Pappa of the Chicago Fire with six goals. The six goals are one more
than his previous career high of five in 2009, when he split time with
Houston and San Jose.
Wondolowski Comes Through in the Clutch
Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski is tied for second in game-winning
goals in MLS play with three goals, along with Juan Pablo Angel of the
New York Red Bulls, Guillermo Barros Schelotto of the Columbus Crew,
Dwayne De Rosario of Toronto FC, Kei Kamara of the Kansas City Wizards,
and Marco Pappa of the Chicago Fire.
Convey Remains Near Top of Leaderboard
Quakes midfielder Bobby Convey sits alone in second in the league in
assists with seven. This total ties his career high, which he matched in
2001 for D.C. United. Convey trails only Galaxy midfielder, Landon
Donovan, who has nine assists. Convey also ranks third in assists per
game with a 0.58 average.
Clean Sheet Cannon
Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon is currently tied for second in shutouts
with five clean sheets, along with Bouna Coundoul of the New York Red
Bulls, Stefan Frei of Toronto FC, William Hesmer of the Columbus Crew,
Jimmy Nielsen of the Kansas City Wizards, and Nick Rimando of Real Salt
Lake.
Alvarez Approaching 25 Career Goals
Quakes forward Arturo Alvarez has 23 career goals in his eight year
career in the MLS. This season Alvarez has two goals in five games.

fourth all-time in wins (103) in league history. For San Jose, Cannon is
first in club history as a goalkeeper in starts (170), minutes played
(15,471), saves (686), wins (65), and shutouts (43) and second in
appearances (170), goals against average (1.33), and saves percentage
(73.4). He also holds the team's all-time record for saves in a game
with 12 on July 8, 2000 at Colorado.
Corrales Among All-Time Leaders
Ramiro Corrales has the most appearances in franchise history with 179
and has made 163 starts, while logging 14,495 minutes played as a member
of the Quakes. He is now alone in second place in franchise history in
starts, third in all-time in club history for minutes played and ninth
in assists with 21.
Quakes Host Club Partner Tottenham Hotspur July 17
The San Jose Earthquakes will play club partner Tottenham Hotspur from
the English Premier League (EPL) on Saturday, July 17 at Buck Shaw
Stadium. The kick-off time will be announced at a later date. Season
ticket holders should use their Bonus Game “B” ticket for the match.

Hotspur, also known as Spurs, signed a club partnership agreement in
2008 with the objective of creating a long-term bond between the two
clubs. The relationship focuses on both soccer and commercial
development by exchanging and implementing the best practices from both
organizations. The partnership to date has seen Earthquakes technical
staff visiting Spurs Lodge on numerous occasions, with the team using
the Tottenham Hotspur training facility as a base for this season’s
pre-season preparations.

The San Jose Earthquakes announced last week that their game that was
scheduled for Saturday, September 18 has been moved to Wednesday, Sept.

Quakes Individual Tickets
The San Jose Earthquakes announced that individual tickets for all 2010
Earthquakes home games are now on sale. The Quakes significantly reduced
prices for the 2010 season with prices ranging from $20-50. Tickets for
the much anticipated 2010 campaign are available online at
sjearthquakes.com or by calling 1-800-225-2277. The new, reduced prices
for the 2010 season are as follows; Premier Midfield $50 per game ($60
in 2009), Center Circle $35 per game ($40 in 2009), Sideline $25 per

The San Jose Earthquakes have one partial plan for the 2010 season still
