Quakes on the hunt for a Designated Player

John Doyle Academy Update

San Jose Earthquakes General Manager John Doyle confirmed on Saturday that the team is actively pursuing a potential designated player.

Negotiations have been ongoing with "a player that has experience in two of the top leagues in Europe." Negotiations are serious enough that ownership has signed off on the potential signing, Doyle said.

The Quakes don't have a time frame for what could be an historic signing. Still, the third-year general manager feels an agreement could be reached in the near future.

In their third year since re-entering the league, the San Jose Earthquakes have yet to ink a designated player. Seven MLS teams have taken advantage of the Designated Player Rule. Five of those seven teams have signed multiple DPs.
