MLS Playoff Update: Where they stand

MLS Playoff Update: Where they stand - Convey and Wondolowski celebrate, Toronto FC in hot water

The San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders can feel safer about their post-season chances after slaying a pair of Eastern Conference contenders over the weekend.

San Jose's 3-2 win against Toronto FC on Saturday gave the Quakes a six-point cushion on ninth-place Kansas City with a game in hand. The Reds now trail eighth-place Colorado by seven points with four games to go.

The Sounders were also benefactors of the weekend's results following a 1-0 win against Chicago and Kansas City's 3-1 loss to FC Dallas.

Elsewhere around the league, Real Salt Lake became the second team to clinch a playoff spot following its draw against the Colorado Rapids. The MLS Cup holders also picked up a point in the race for the Supporter's Shield following the Galaxy's 2-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls on Friday.

The New England Revolution and Houston Dynamo were officially eliminated from post-season contention on Saturday.
