The race for the Supporters' Shield isn't the only one heating up. With four games remaining (for most teams), the battle for the Budweiser Golden Boot is catching fire. Below, the top six at the moment.
Edson Buddle, Los Angeles, 14 goals, 21 games
At the beginning of the season, the Galaxy forward was simply unstoppable. In his first nine games, Buddle scored nine goals, bagging four braces in that span. His form won him a spot in the US World Cup team. Though he’s slowed down a bit since his return, Buddle has still scored five goals in 12 games. [Watch: Buddle scores No. 14]
Juan Pablo Angel, New York, 13 goals, 26 games
The Red Bulls’ target man is, by far, his team’s leading scorer. Ángel, who has three braces on the season, has been a bit inconsistent. Until facing the Galaxy on Friday, the Colombian had gone five games without a goal, his longest spell. But when called upon to take the spot kick in the 2-0 win, he delivered the blow to reconcile with the net and pull closer to Buddle. [Watch: Angel buries PK vs. LA]
Dwayne De Rosario, Toronto, 12 goals, 24 games
Toronto’s leader is, well, leading his team in goals and is second in assists. The Canadian international blazed out of the gates and, playing both domestic and international campaigns, slowly fell off pace. However, DeRo has recently re-emerged and is as hot as anyone, scoring three goals in his last two games out. [Watch: De Rosario's beautiful curler]
Sebastien Le Toux, Philadelphia, 12 goals, 23 games
Speaking of leaders, the man that has had the biggest impact on his team has been the Frenchman. Le Toux has been a big offensive spark for the expansion Philadelphia, leading his team in both goals and assists. Not only is he deep in the race for the Budweiser Golden Boot, he’s also tagged in the race for league MVP. [Watch: Le Toux converts FK]
Chris Wondolowski, San Jose, 12 goals, 22 games
The Bay Area native has been a pleasant surprise for the Bay Area team. All season, Wondolowski has focused on working hard and helping San Jose, even if that meant playing in midfield instead of in his striking role. But against Toronto on Saturday, Wondo took a huge step forward in the race by scoring his career MLS hat trick, good for Player of the Week honors. [Watch: Wondolowski finishes hat trick]
Conor Casey, Colorado, 11 goals, 23 games
The big man has been big for the Rapids this season. A slow start led to his exclusion from the US World Cup roster, but after the league’s World Cup break, Casey has been lethal. The striker has been very consistent and, since June 5, has scored seven goals in 14 games, including a header that nearly led to Real Salt Lake’s first home loss in 24 games.
