The Quakes were under constant barrage at PPL Park in a game they had to have. Sitting on a five-game winless streak and facing a daunting slate over the five, San Jose at least needed to escape Philadelphia with a draw.
After Fred gave the Union an early lead, Cornell Glen supplied an equalizer just before the halftime whistle. However, over the final 45 minutes, the Quakes defense would be put to the test time and again as the upstart expansion franchise probed for the go-ahead goal before its home crowd.
In stoppage time, with San Jose desperately clinging to a point on the road, Bobby Convey played a ball up top to second-half substitute Arturo Alvarez. The attack-minded Salvadoran didn't hesitate to push forward alone. Near the top of the box, Alvarez pushed the ball to his left foot and slammed home a dramatic game winner.
