Verizon Open Tryout draws 200 participants

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Two-hundred players took their shot at earning a trial with the San Jose Earthquakes First Team during the Verizon Open Tryout on Sunday at the Mustang Soccer Complex in Danville, Calif.

The Quakes technical staff - head coach Frank Yallop included - was on hand to evaluate players ahead of the team’s five-day training camp in Ventura. San Jose’s coaches will make a decision on whether to call any players from the tryout into camp following the team’s trip to London from Feb. 17 to Feb. 27.

Most of the participants were Bay Area products, but others traveled from the East Coast or as far away as France and England.

Sunday’s tryout began with a series of warm-up drills before players broke into teams for 11v11 full-field scrimmages. Each participant received a Verizon Open Tryout jersey, an adidas drawstring bag and a voucher for two tickets to a future Quakes game.

The Quakes opened training camp two weeks ago and will play their first exhibition of 2011 on Monday against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center. San Jose will also take on the Los Angeles Galaxy on Thursday at The HDC and the Ventura County Fusion in a closed-door session on Friday.
