SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes will donate $1 to victims of the natural disaster in Japan for every fan who attends the team’s 2011 home opener against Real Salt Lake on Saturday, March 19 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff for the match is 7:30 p.m. PT.

Additionally, the team will donate $50 for every save an Earthquakes goalkeeper records during the 2011 season to the American Red Cross for disaster relief. Last season, San Jose had 119 saves in 30 regular season games. Fans can also contribute while at the Quakes home opener using donation bins around the stadium.

“We were deeply saddened by the events that transpired in Japan on Thursday,” said Earthquakes President David Kaval. “As an organization, it’s our mission to be a leader in the community. We recognize that there are thousands of families in the Bay Area who were affected by this tragedy and I would like to personally encourage all of our fans to make a donation to the relief effort.”

In response to the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan on Thursday, The Red Cross has already launched relief efforts. Visit Redcross.org or text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 from your phone to support American Red Cross emergency and disaster relief efforts.

Tickets for San Jose’s home opener can be purchased at SJEarthquakes.com or by calling 1-800-225-2277.

Note from the American Red Cross: Your gift to the American Red Cross will support our disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific. On those rare occasions when donations exceed American Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters.
