Academy Update: U-16s continue hot start to 2011

The Earthquakes Academy teams had a successful weekend at home at Diablo Vista Park, picking up three wins against Pateadores and Irving Strikers.

The U-16s have won four matches in a row after defeating the Strikers 5-1 and Pateadores 1-0. Two goals from Gianni Spatola highlighted the win against Irvine Strikers, with Cesar Mendoza, Angel Heredia (penalty), and Gerard Mendoza all getting on the scoresheet as well. Jesse Garcia of Livermore High registered the lone goal against Pateadores.

The U-18 team split its two matches against Irvine and Pateadores, coming back from 1-0 down to beat the Strikers 2-1 before falling 2-0 to Pateadores on Sunday. With an assist from Nick Lima, Israel Ayala scored the goal to tie the game against Irvine. Carlos Gonzalez found the net for the winner via an assist from U.S. youth international Alfred Edmonds.

Next weekend, both teams will take on two more Southern California-based sides. The Quakes will play host to Real So Cal on Saturday and Cosmos Academy West on Sunday (U-18s at 1 p.m., U16s at 3:30 for both days). All four matches will be played at the Nutrilite Training Facility.
