San Jose to Visit Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Empire Field, Host Columbus
The San Jose Earthquakes will try to end a three-game league skid when they travel to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Empire Field on Wednesday, May 11 in an MLS league fixture. The game marks the first ever meeting between the two clubs. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on television on Comcast SportsNet California and on the radio on KZSF 1370 (Spanish) and KDOW 1220 (English). After the mid-week game in Vancouver, San Jose returns home to take on the Columbus Crew at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara on Saturday, May 14. That game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on television on Comcast SportsNet California and on the radio on KZSF 1370 and KDOW 1220.

As Vancouver Whitecaps FC are in their first year in MLS, this will be the first-ever match-up between the two clubs in official competition.

The San Jose Earthquakes won 1-0 in overtime with a goal from Ike Opara in the 120th minute. After a scoreless regulation filled with lots of physical play, the Quakes finally broke the deadlock in the last minute when Sam Cronin picked up his own cleared corner kick and swung a cross back into the box. Opara rose high above the defense to nod home the game-winner to the near post and send San Jose into the final play-in round against the Chicago Fire. Quakes goalkeeper Andrew Weber made three saves to earn the clean sheet.


Misc. Notes

Dawkins Undergoes Successful Surgery
San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Simon Dawkins underwent a successful bilateral fasciotomy on Thursday, May 5. Dawkins had missed San Jose's match against the Philadelphia Union the previous Saturday due to lower leg chronic exertional compartment syndrome. Earthquakes team orthopedist Dr. Mike Oberlander performed the surgery at the Sequoia Surgical Pavilion. Dawkins was acquired on loan from club partner Tottenham Hotspur on March 16. He immediately made his presence felt with goals against Seattle Sounders FC on April 2 and Toronto FC on April 9. His strike against the Reds was nominated for MLS Goal of the Week.


Earthquakes-LA Galaxy Match Time for June 25 Changed to 3:30 p.m. PT
The San Jose Earthquakes have announced that the game time for their June 25 match against the LA Galaxy at Buck Shaw Stadium has been changed to 3:30 p.m. PT on FOX Soccer. Additionally, individual tickets for that game are now on sale. In 2010, Chris Wondolowski stunned a league-leading LA Galaxy squad with a fourth minute goal that would stand up for a 1-0 win. The Earthquakes drew a record crowd of 10,799 at Buck Shaw Stadium for the day game on Aug. 21. San Jose is 3-3-2 against LA Galaxy since returning to MLS in 2008 and holds a 9-7 scoring advantage over that stretch.


Academy Update: U16s Sweep, Within One Game of Second Place
Four different goal scorers got on the board as the San Jose Earthquakes U16 Academy team trounced local rivals De Anza Force 4-1 on Saturday. William Villa and Cristian Cruz scored within four minutes of each other in the first half, while Jesus Garcia and Jonathan Monterroso each tallied in the second half. Earlier in the day, the U18 teams of the respective academies battled to a 1-1 draw. Carlos Gonzalez got on the board for the Earthquakes U18s in the 27th minute, but United States youth international Stefano Bonomo tied it in the second half. On Sunday, the U16s recorded their second consecutive win, a 2-1 victory over Santa Cruz Breakers. With a win next Saturday against Cal Odyssey, the U16s could move into second place in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. In the late match on Sunday, Michael Bernardi and James Callinan scored in a losing effort for the U18s, a 4-2 result against Santa Cruz Breakers. Callinan, who has committed to Stanford next fall, has seen time on Earthquakes senior team in multiple Reserve League matches this season.


Third Installment of EARTHQUAKE VS. SHARK Unveiled
The third competition between Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch and Sharks defenseman Jason Demers was unveiled last week on SJEarthquakes.com. Busch won the first round, a shootout on ice using a soccer ball, while Demers tied things up on a long-shot challenge using a soccer ball to shoot full ice into the hockey net. History of the Quakes-Crew Rivalry
The Earthquakes and the Crew have had a strong rivalry in MLS history, playing twice in the playoffs and competing in a number of memorable games … In 2001, the Quakes eliminated the Crew from the MLS Cup Playoffs with two convincing wins, 3-1 and 3-0 en route to winning the MLS Cup … Columbus turned the tables on San Jose in 2002 by knocking the Quakes out of the playoffs with a pair of 2-1 victories that both came on goals in the final 10 minutes of the game … Quakes midfielder Ronnie Ekelund scored one of the best goals in league history against Columbus on Sept. 7, 2002. Richard Mulrooney lifted a free kick up for Ekelund, who half-volleyed a shot from 25 yards out into the upper corner. The Quakes went on to win 4-3 in overtime. That overtime win was the team’s only regular season overtime win in team history. The Quakes went 1-1-26 all-time in regular season overtime games. The league eliminated overtimes for the regular season following the 2003 season … Last season, both games ended in ties. After a 2-2 draw in San Jose, with goals from Eddie Gaven and Chad Marshall for the Crew and Arturo Alvarez and Chris Wondolowski for the Earthquakes, the two sides battled to a 0-0 tie in Columbus.

Wondolowski Moving Up Quakes’ All-Time Scoring Charts
San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski continues to inch up the franchise’s all-time scoring charts. Wondo’s goal against Chivas USA a few weeks ago against Chivas USA was his 24th with the Quakes, fifth-most in Quakes history. Next up on the list is current Houston Dynamo striker Brian Ching, who tallied 25 goals during his time at the Earthquakes from 2003-05. The career leader for the club is Ronald Cerritos, who notched 61 from 1997-2001, when the team was known as the Clash, and one year in 2005. 


Busch Among MLS Career Leaders List for Shutouts
Jon Busch is No. 8 on the MLS career shutouts list with 54. The Earthquakes’ starting goalkeeper has recorded eight clean sheets in San Jose. He earned 21 shutouts during three seasons (2007-09) with the Chicago Fire and had 25 in five seasons with the Columbus Crew (2002-06).


Lenhart, Ampaipitakwong, Morrow Make First Starts With Earthquakes
Forward Steven Lenhart, midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong and defender Justin Morrow made their first career starts with the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday against the Philadelphia Union. Lenhart had come off the bench against Chivas USA the previous week to make his San Jose debut at Buck Shaw Stadium in the 80th minute and played a full 90 minutes against the Union, recording the team’s lone shot on goal. Ampaipitakwong, a rookie selected in the second round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by San Jose, played 72 minutes at left and right mid before subbing off for Ryan Johnson. Morrow, a second-round pick in 2010 from Notre Dame, played the full 90 minutes at left back in his fourth appearance with the club.


Earthquakes, Alaska Airlines Partner for Giveaway on June 4
The San Jose Earthquakes and Alaska Airlines will partner up for a giveaway on June 4 when the Quakes host the Houston Dynamo at Buck Shaw Stadium. The first 5,000 fans will receive a free Hawaiian shirt bag tag. One fan in attendance will also have the chance to win a trip to Hawaii or Mexico courtesy of Alaska Airlines during a halftime kick-to-win contest.


San Jose Partners Up with Fresh Coast Beach Soccer Tournament
The San Jose Earthquakes announced last week that they have signed a tournament partnership with the Fresh Coast Beach Soccer Championships. This year, the 5-on-5 tournament will be held on June 18 and 19 in front of the famous Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, California. There will be several youth, men’s and women’s divisions, with an open men’s cash prize division. The Quakes will be providing each team ticket vouchers to see the team take on either the New York Red Bulls or Philadelphia Union. Several Earthquakes players will also make an appearance to meet with fans, sign autographs and take photos.


July 2 Match vs. New York Red Bulls to be Played at Stanford Stadium
The San Jose Earthquakes have moved their Saturday, July 2 match against international stars Thierry Henry and Rafa Márquez and the New York Red Bulls to Stanford Stadium in Stanford, Calif. The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. PT and air live on ESPN2. Following the match, the Earthquakes will treat fans to the best fireworks show on the Peninsula for the Fourth of July weekend. Fans can stay in their seats or move onto the field for the best view to watch the fireworks. The Epicenter Fan Zone will be moved from Buck Shaw Stadium to Stanford for the match. Fans will be able to enjoy foosball, corn hole, face painting and poster making prior to kickoff. Gourmet food trucks will also be on site.
