On the anniversary of one of the U.S. national team’s greatest days, the San Jose Earthquakes and New York Red Bulls meet on the site when the clubs face off at Stanford Stadium. The Earthquakes are coming off a wild scoreless draw with the LA Galaxy last weekend in the largest MLS crowd ever at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Red Bulls continued their road swing with a third game without a victory, reaching a 1-1 draw at the Chicago Fire.

• The Red Bulls took the lead after just two minutes. A corner from
the left was flicked on at the near post, falling to Dane Richards. He
chipped the ball back into the center where Luke Rodgers was able to
steer home a header.
• Rodgers and the Red Bulls doubled their lead in the 15th minute.
Thierry Henry stripped the ball from an Earthquakes defender on the
right flank and slotted a teasing ball across the face of the goal where
Rodgers raced in to hammer home his second goal of the night.
• Henry got his long-awaited goal with three minutes to play.
Rodgers returned Henry’s earlier favor, chipping in a cross to the far
post. Henry snuck behind a San Jose defender and powered a header into
the far side netting.

The San Jose Earthquakes returned home for the first of a pair of
high-profile matches, reaching a scoreless draw with the LA Galaxy on
Saturday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes have 20 points from
15 games on the season, sitting in sixth place in the Western
Conference.
LAST MATCH
• The Galaxy finished the match with Mike Magee, a ninth-year
forward, in net for the final 47 minutes while Los Angeles played a man
down. The Galaxy survived after starting goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts
left the match due to an fractured arm in the 24th minute and backup
Josh Saunders received a straight red card in the 43rd.
• Magee finished with four saves on the afternoon, with three
occuring after the 80th minute -- though the Earthquakes nearly took an
early lead, with Ricketts in goal, but Simon Dawkins' effort crashed off
the woodwork. Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch made one save.
• Earthquakes boss Frank Yallop made two changes to the team that
fell 1-0 to Sporting Kansas City at Livestrong Sporting Park. Ryan
Johnson and Simon Dawkins came back into the team, for Anthony
Ampaipitakwong and Sam Cronin.

• After exploding for 13 goals over a five-game span, the
Earthquakes have now been shut out in back-to-back games, a first for
this season.
• “I thought that the first half was the best soccer that we have
played since the team came back in 2008. We were moving the ball well
and we created a number of chances. We should have been up a couple of
goals,” said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop.
• It was the second time this season the Quakes played extensive
minutes with a man-advantage where they weren’t able to turn it their
way. They lost 1-0 at Philadelphia on April 30 despite playing a man-up
for 50 minutes.
• “We are disappointed that we didn’t get the three points today,
especially playing a man up. We couldn’t break them down the way that we
wanted to and LA really did a good job crushing the space,” Yallop
said. “I can’t fault the guys for their effort, but we couldn’t sustain
the good play we had early in the game in the second half.”
• Striker Chris Wondolowski will again be available after missing
four games while with the U.S. national team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
• On Monday, the Earthquakes sent Brandon McDonald to D.C. United in exchange for allocation money.
• “Ike [Opara] got healthy, Ike played well,” Quakes general manager
John Doyle said. “We’ve always known we can count on Bobby [Burling].
Brad Ring playing well [at defensive midfielder, McDonald’s alternate
spot], that covered another position. It became an opportunity to get
some allocation money, and we took it.”
• The Quakes have kept clean sheets in three of the last seven
games, after recording just one shutout in their opening eight.
• “I didn’t really have much to do today so it is a credit to the
back four for making my job easy. Defensively we’ve been playing really
well the past two months,” goalkeeper Jon Busch said.
NEW YORK RED BULLS
The New York Red Bulls played to a second draw in three games on their
road trip, this time a 1-1 result with the Chicago Fire on Sunday
afternoon at Toyota Park. The Red Bulls have 24 points from 17 games, in
a tie for second place in the Eastern Conference.
LAST MATCH
• The Red Bulls took the lead with an opportunistic goal five
minutes before the halftime whistle. Yamith Cuesta couldn't clear at the
top of the 18, hitting the ball right in the path of Joel Lindpere, who
collected and calmly slotted his shot past an onrushing Sean Johnson.
• But Marco Pappa equalized for the home side in the 58th minute on a
speculative shot from 30 yards, bouncing a left-footed effort toward
the far post. New York goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul got to the ball in
plenty of time, but missed on his attempted parry and the ball trickled
into the net.
• Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe made one change to the team that
fell 4-2 to Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field. Thierry Henry came
back from suspension for Austin da Luz.

• The Red Bulls are completing a four-game road swing with the visit
to northern California. They have started the trip with two draws and a
loss; New York has won once in its last 10 games.
• “It’s been tough for us and perhaps a bit unlucky in the end,”
head coach Hans Backe said. “Portland, we normally would have won that
game and Seattle we were unlucky, I think, in that second half after we
battled back. Then in Chicago, I think we were really fatigued.”
• While the Red Bulls were not able to keep a clean sheet for the
first time since April 30 (10 games), they did allow just the single
goal after conceding seven in their previous team.
• “It’s been a big problem but we’ve focused on it and we have to
stop it now. I thought we did better with that today,” Backe said. “We
battled hard and deserved a point. We have to start coming out with
three points.”
• Bouna Coundoul made his first start since May 15, after Greg
Sutton played seven consecutive games between the posts. The Senegal
international was beaten from long range for the lone goal.
• "You know, some days those bounces will go your way, others
won’t," Coundoul said. "I think another day on a ball that makes that
bounce, I would catch it easily. But once in a while the ball will take
those bounces and you are left just watching the ball go in the net.”
• The Red Bulls have now played to six draws in 11 games where
they’ve scored first. The six games in not coming away with maximum
points after opening the scoring is the most in MLS.
• “I think everyone understands now that we cannot go on like this.
We score one, but we give goals back. They get very stupid, easy goals
against us, and then we fight to get the goals back. Then we do
something stupid again. So, for me, game day should be like a party, I
want to have fun. I play; I want to smile on the field. It’s not fun
anymore,” said Joel Lindpere.
• On Monday, the Red Bulls sent shockwaves throughout MLS by dealing
Dwayne De Rosario to D.C. United in exchange for Dax McCarty. De
Rosario was obtained from Toronto FC just after the start of the season,
scoring two goals with four assists in 13 appearances for the Red
Bulls.
• “Dax is an exciting young player who will immediately add his
dynamic style of play to our midfield,” said Red Bull New York general
manager and sporting director Erik Soler. “He is an excellent two-way
player who will contribute both to our defense and to our attack for
seasons to come. To acquire such a promising player, we had to make a
difficult decision in trading Dwayne. During his short time in New York,
Dwayne has been a consummate professional.
• On Tuesday, the Red Bulls advanced to the quarterfinals of the
U.S. Open Cup following a 2-1 win against FC New York of USL PRO. Owen
Morrison opened the scoring on 56 minutes for FCNY, but Corey Hertzog
netted two minutes later, then John Rooney hit for the winner in the
65th minute.
