SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has acquired Ecuadoran international forward Edmundo Zura on loan from El Nacional. He will be added to the roster upon receipt of his P-1 Visa. Per league and team policy terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We have been scouting a number of players for a long time ahead of this decision and I believe Edmundo has the potential to help our club right away,” said Earthquakes General Manager John Doyle. “We have been looking for attacking players that can score goals and provide a presence in the box. Edmundo is a well-rounded forward who can play with his back to the goal and get behind defenses. We are excited to bring him in as the team makes its push to qualify for the postseason.”

[inline_node:10247]Zura has 11 caps with the Ecuador National Team and scored one goal, a strike against Sweden in January of 2007. He also captained his country’s squad to its first major trophy, a win against Brazil in the 2007 U-23 Pan-American Championships.

Most recently, the 27-year-old made 30 appearances and scored 10 goals for El Nacional since joining the club in 2009. The powerful striker had four goals and one assist for La Maquina Roja, a member of the Ecuadorian First Division, in 2011. Prior to joining El Nacional, Zura appeared in nine games while on loan for the Newcastle Jets of the Australian A-League as a “Marquee Player”, similar to the MLS version of a Designated Player. The loan was one of three stints between 2004 and 2008 that he experienced during a longstanding career with Imbabura SC, a club where Zura has scored 23 goals in 54 appearances dating back to 2002.
