Bingham plays 90 in 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen

David Bingham USA Training 1

Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham saw his first action with the United States U-23s, earning a 1-1 draw against a Bayer Leverkusen squad composed of first teamers and reserves on Tuesday.

The rookie keeper kept a clean sheet until Brazilian midfielder Leonardo Lima Ribeiro sneaked a free kick from 20 yards out around the wall and just out of reach of Bingham's outstretched arms in the 89th minute. Bingham trained with the US U-23s from Nov. 2 through Nov. 16 as head coach Caleb Porter worked to find a pool of players for 2012 Olympic qualifying.

“Our main objective was to bring the group together to start the process for London 2012,” U.S. Youth Technical Director Claudio Reyna told USSoccer.com. “Just having them here was great and we got to know them individually as well as collectively.”

“We got to train them at a pretty high intensity throughout the week and give them two competitive games. It was a treat to work with these players and we look forward to building from here towards qualifying in March.”
