Recap: Quakes, Timbers draw in tournament opener

PORTLAND, Ore. – The San Jose Earthquakes battled to a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers in their opener of a four-team tournament at JELD-WEN Field Monday night.


Portland got on the board first after Kalif Alhassan played a short corner to Diego Chara. Alhassan took the return pass and looped a shot to the far post for a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.


San Jose equalized in the 59th minute as Hanyer Mosquera deflected in a cross from Chris Wondolowski for an own goal. Tressor Moreno created the initial attack after intercepting a pass in the attacking third before finding Wondolowski with a leading ball into the right side of the area.


The Quakes return to action on Thursday when they take on AIK (Sweden) at JELD-WEN Field. The match will kickoff at 5 p.m. PT and will be livestreamed at www.sjearthquakes.com.


San Jose wraps up the Portland tournament with a 2:30 p.m. match against Chivas USA on Sunday. That game will also be livestreamed on www.sjearthquakes.com.
