The beginning of spring brings with it several momentous events and observances, but most noteworthy in the youth soccer world is the largest and most prestigious international youth tournament in the United States: Dallas Cup.
This weekend, two San Jose Earthquakes teams are flying to Dallas to represent the club in Dr. Pepper Dallas Cup XXIII. The teams will compete in the U14 and U15 age groups and are comprised of core players from the U14 and U16 Academy teams as well as Pre-Academy players from throughout Northern California. The elite field of teams in the U14 and U15 age groups will travel from Mexico, Germany, Venezuela, Costa Rica and England as well as the top teams from throughout the United States.
“The opportunity for our young players to test themselves against top international and national competition will be a great experience,” said Chris Lietch, Earthquakes Academy Technical Director. “This is one of the top youth tournaments in the world and we’re excited for our teams to compete.”
The U14 Academy team will face Leon Independiente (MEX), New Mexico Nike Rush (USA) and Solar FC Chelsea (USA) in group play. The U15’s square off against Tigres (MEX), Chicago Fire Academy (USA), and Irving Elite FC (USA). Teams must win their group to advance to the knockout rounds.
“We are in final preparations this week. The U15’s had their last scrimmage Wednesday night and the U14’s have theirs on Thursday night. We’re ready to go,” said head coach Jeff Jenkins.
