Reserve League: Quakes, Galaxy play to 1-1 draw

Sercan Guvenisik vs Houston Dynamo

CARSON, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes and host LA Galaxy traded first-half penalty-kick goals and ultimately played to a 1-1 draw in an MLS Reserve League match at The Home Depot Center complex on May 8.

The visiting Quakes (1-1-1, 4 pts.) got on the scoreboard first in the 31st minute, as Sercan Guvenisik converted his kick from the penalty spot after a handball call in the box against Galaxy defender Dan Keat. The goal was Guvenisik’s third in two Reserve League games against LA. The Turkish forward had scored a first-half brace in his Reserve League debut while on a one-week trial in San Jose in June of 2011.

The LA Galaxy (1-1-1, 4 pts.) leveled the score just five minutes later as Chad Barrett was tripped up in the penalty area and Marcelo Sarvas beat David Bingham with his spot-kick attempt. Sarvas’ initial attempt was actually saved by Bingham, but the match referee determined that the Quakes’ second-year goalkeeper left his line early and allowed Sarvas to retake the kick.

The home side appeared to take the lead shortly thereafter, only for Kyle Nakazawa’s goal to be disallowed for an infraction.

The Galaxy had the better chances following the halftime interval. Brad Ring, again playing right back for the Quakes reserves, blocked a goal-bound strike from Rafael Garcia in the 75th after Bingham had denied the Galaxy rookie just seconds before. Bingham then also tipped a free kick by Barrett over the crossbar late in the match, as neither side could disturb the deadlock.

The Earthquakes reserves return to home action next Monday, May 14, playing host to the Chivas USA reserves at the Earthquakes Training Facility in San Jose beginning at 11 a.m. Admission is free.
