Recap: Wondo nets late winner vs. San Luis FC

Chris Wondolowski vs LA Galaxy

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Chris Wondolowski scored in the second minute of second-half stoppage time to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-0 win against San Luis FC in an international friendly at Buck Shaw Stadium on Thursday.

The Earthquakes were building toward a goal over the final 15 minutes, generating several quality chances before Wondolowski broke the deadlock. In the waning moments of the match, Wondolowski stole a pass at the feet of San Luis FC defender Jaime Correa, took a touch and then beat goalkeeper Cesar Lozano one-on-one to seal San Jose’s win.

Wondolowski had two other good looks at goal earlier in the match. Just before halftime, he took a pass from Steven Lenhart and chipped the goalkeeper, only to be denied by the crossbar. He also had a chance in front of goal in the 18th minute, but got tangled with teammate Ramiro Corrales sliding to hit a cross in from Jacob Hustedt, sending the shot inches wide.

Overall, the Earthquakes outshot their guests 16-11, sending eight shots on goal to San Luis FC’s three.

Despite being outshot, San Luis FC had at least one quality chance with Luis Mendoza rattling the crossbar with a shot from inside the 6-yard box in the third minute. San Jose’s Steven Lenhart ended up with the ball on the counter attack, but misfired while one-on-one with the San Luis goalkeeper.

The Earthquakes improved to 6-8-7 all-time in international friendlies, including a 4-0-3 clip at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The club returns to action against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center on Saturday, Sept. 15. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet Plus, 95.3 KRTY and 1370 KZSF.
