Last Game

Earthquakes 2, Real Salt Lake 1; Sept. 21, 2013; Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah
The Earthquakes continued their push toward the MLS Cup Playoffs with an historic 2-1 win against Real Salt Lake in front of a sold out crowd at Rio Tinto Stadium. In addition to three points, the Earthquakes celebrated their 200th win since joining MLS in 1996. Their first came on April 6, 1996 at Spartan Stadium, a 1-0 result against D.C. United in the league’s inaugural game. The match saw a flurry of goals midway through the first half with Steven Lenhart opening the salvo in the 18th minute. Rafael Baca sprayed a pass from midfield to Cordell Cato on the wing. The Trinidadian took a touch and sent a perfectly-placed cross toward the near post where Lenhart dove for a glancing header past Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando. The hosts didn’t wait long to respond as Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales linked up on a corner kick one minute later. Beckerman looped a pass toward the far post where an unmarked Morales tapped home the tying goal. Lenhart capped the scoring moments later with a powerful header from close range. Shea Salinas took a free kick from 35 yards out that pinpointed the target man mid-stride, sealing San Jose’s second road win of the season.

Last Game vs. Chivas USA

Earthquakes 2, Chivas USA 0; Aug. 3, 2013; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
Chris Wondolowski scored twice to lead the Earthquakes to a 2-0 win against Chivas USA in front of a sold out crowd of 10,525 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The game was Wondolowski’s first with San Jose since his CONCACAF Gold Cup championship run with the United States Men’s National Team. The reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player left his footprint with a goal just before halftime and then sealed the match with another midway through the second half. The Earthquakes’ first tally came in the 45th minute as Steven Beitashour sent a perfectly weighted pass from his defensive half to Victor Bernardez in the area. The Honduran center back leapt and headed a pass across the goal face to Wondolowski for the finish.  Wondolowski doubled his haul in the 87th minute, this time pouncing on a loose ball in the box. Adam Jahn slotted a pass to Shea Salinas on the right side of the area where the speedy winger blasted a shot on target, forcing Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to make a difficult save. However, Wondolowski was first to the rebound off of Kennedy’s hands, chipping in his second strike from close range to up his 2013 goal total to seven. United States defender Clarence Goodson made his San Jose debut, starting and playing 90 minutes. He helped anchor a backline that also featured Beitashour, Bernardez and Englishman Jordan Stewart. Also making his Earthquake debut was Salvadoran international Jaime Alas. The crafty winger entered for Cordell Cato in the 77th minute.
