The Earthquakes stayed in the MLS Cup Playoff race with a key 1-0 win against Sporting Kansas City in front of a sold out crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium. Chris Wondolowski supplied the firepower on his own bobblehead night, heading home his eighth goal of the season in the 55th minute. After a scoreless first half, the Earthquakes didn’t wait long to find the scoreboard. Sam Cronin tried to send a ball into the mix, but it was deflected wide to Steve Beitashour. Last Game vs. FC Dallas

Earthquakes 0, FC Dallas 1; May 25, 2013; FC Dallas Stadium, Frisco, Texas
The Earthquakes fell 1-0 against FC Dallas, Western Conference leaders at the time. San Jose outshot their hosts 17-10 and out-possessed them, but came up short thanks in part to several key saves from FC Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez. FC Dallas scored the game’s only goal midway through the first half. David Ferreira carried the ball for half the length of the field on a counterattack before finding Fabian Castillo open on the right wing. Castillo cut back toward the goal and then placed a shot to the far post that narrowly eluded Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch. San Jose had its chances in the second half, including a pair from reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player Chris Wondolowski. The first came in the 81st minute as Shea Salinas floated a cross to the back post where Wondolowski volleyed a shot that was bound for the net if not for a reaction save by Fernandez. Wondolowski had another chance minutes later, sending a header low toward the near post, but Fernandez was again game to the challenge with a diving stop.

To drain one of the holes, over 600 tons of rock had to be used.
