Over 800 participate in second annual Earthquakes Challenge

The second annual Earthquakes 5K/10K Challenge, presented by Stanford Hospital and Clinics, took place on Sunday, Aug. 18. Over 800 runners participated in the event that included a 10K race, 5K run/walk and 1K Kids Fun Run – all benefiting the San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund and Health Trust Silicon Valley.

Over 271 runners participated in the 10K division. The course took runners through historic Santa Clara, starting and ending at Santa Clara University. Adam Roach placed first in the men’s division with a time of 30:36. Melinda Dinapoli from Saratoga, Calif. won the women’s division with a time of 37:22 and a pace of 6:01. Even Earthquakes President Dave Kaval competed in the 10K as well, placing 47th overall with his time of 46:59.

The 5K which also went through the streets of Santa Clara drew a much bigger crowd. 600 runners participated in this year 3.1 mile race. 11-year-old Natalie Mazaud won the women’s division, and San Jose resident Kyle Hillebrecht won first place in the men’s division with an overall time of 17:41.

The fun did not end at the finish line, though. After the race, participants, friends and family joined in the Earthquakes' Epicenter to enjoy food, drink and an awards ceremony.
