Earthquakes Sign Watson to Multi-Year Contract as Club’s Head Coach
The Earthquakes officially removed the interim tag from Mark Watson’s title on Oct. 30, signing him to a multi-year contract. Watson was 11-5-3 during MLS matches and 14-7-3 in all competitions as the club’s interim head coach after taking over on June 7, 2013. He had the best points-per-game average in the league since his first match at 1.89 ppg. The Earthquakes narrowly missed the MLS Cup Playoffs, tying the Colorado Rapids for the fifth and final spot in the Western Conference, only to fall short due to the league's second tiebreaker. He also led the club to the CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinals where they will face Toluca (Mexico) next March.
Earthquakes to Open Levi’s® Stadium on Aug. 2, 2014
The Santa Clara Stadium Authority and the San Jose Earthquakes announced last week that they have partnered to present the first event at Levi’s® Stadium. The Earthquakes will play host to Seattle Sounders FC in one of Major League Soccer’s most heated rivalries on August 2, 2014. Earthquakes season ticket holders and Levi’s® Stadium SBL holders will have priority access to tickets for this event. Tickets for the general public go on sale at a later date. In order to ensure great seats at the match, fans should call the Earthquakes Front Office at 408-556-7700 to purchase season tickets today.
Club Announces Creation of PDL Affiliate
The Earthquakes became the fourth MLS club to establish a Premier Development League squad last week. They will begin competing in 2014 with a home location and coaching staff still to be decided. The PDL has over 60 teams from the United States and Canada split amongst four conferences. The rosters are comprised of amateur players in the U-23 age group. The Earthquakes’ squad will feature players who have competed for the club’s Academy and other locally-based talent. Other MLS teams to field teams directly in the PDL include the Chicago Fire, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the Portland Timbers, while Seattle Sounders FC, the New England Revolution and the Philadelphia Union also hold affiliations with the PDL’s Sounders FC U-23, Real Boston Rams and Reading United AC, respectively. Quakes President Dave Kaval’s Office Hours
Earthquakes president Dave Kaval’s office hours are held every Tuesday between 3 and 5 p.m. Participants are welcome to call or visit in person at our Front Office at 451 El Camino Real, Suite 220 in Santa Clara. In addition, Dave will be holding his office hours from the new stadium site located at 1135 Coleman Ave, San Jose, Calif., on the second Tuesday of each month between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. To make an appointment during his office hours, email Dave directly at president@sjearthquakes.com. ACADEMY NOTES
U-14 Update
The Earthquakes’ U-14 Academy squad beat the San Mateo County Stars 8-0on Saturday. The U-14s return to action on Saturday, Nov. 9 against San Juan SC at the Mather Soccer Complex at 11 a.m.
U-16 Update
The Earthquakes’ U-16s defeated the De Anza Force 2-0 on Sunday at the club’s training facility. Phillip Hausen recorded a brace with goals in the 45th and 60th minutes to improve the Quakes to 5-2-0 this season, second in the Northwest Division. Hausen leads the club with four goals this season. The U-16s return to action on Saturday, Nov. 9 against San Juan SC at the Mather Soccer Complex at 1:30 p.m.
U-18 Update
The Earthquakes’ U-18s lost 4-2 against the De Anza Force on Sunday at the club’s training facility in San Jose. After falling behind in the third minute, Juan Velasquez equalized for the Earthquakes. However, De Anza rallied to score the next two before Elisama Padilla pulled San Jose to within one goal. De Anza capped the scoring in the 90th minute. The loss dropped the Earthquakes to 0-4-3 so far this season. The U-18s return to action on Saturday, Nov. 9 against San Juan SC at the Mather Soccer Complex at 11 a.m.
