No: 5: Advancing in the CCL: It was a rough start in the CCL with two away losses against Montreal and Heredia. Advancing was a huge priority coming into the season and things were looking sketchy as we hosted Montreal in September. What followed was a good old-fashioned beat down and a 3-0 win against the Impact. An early Wondolowski goal broke a 200-minute scoreless streak in CCL play and led to goals by Marvin Chavez and Shea Salinas. The win gave us the wind in our sails to get the big win against CD Heredia in October to advance. Now we are up against Toluca from Liga MX in March in a home and away series. A spot in the CCL semifinals is on the line. It is not an easy task going to 8,750 feet in Mexico to take on a Toluca club that has been in good form. We are working this off-season to prepare the club for not only the altitude, but also for the Mexican-league style of play. This will include optimizing the acclimatization for the trip with the help of the doctors and scientists at Stanford as well as possibly playing another Mexican club as a warm up in February.
