TUCSON, Ariz.
– The San Jose Earthquakes opened their three-game preseason stint in Tucson with a 3-2 loss against the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday at Kino Sports Complex.

San Jose had its chances early, generating opportunities through the combination play of Adam Jahn, Shea Salinas and Innocent Emeghara.

Houston jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. Giles Barnes slipped a through ball ahead of Rob Lovejoy who calmly placed his shot past the outstretched arms of Quakes’ goalkeeper David Bingham.

The Quakes leveled the score in the 28th minute through Adam Jahn. Shea Salinas beat his man on the left flank, darted toward the endline and cut back his pass to top of the six-yard box. Collapsing toward the goal mouth, Jahn tapped his shot to the left of Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric to get San Jose on the board.

Houston forward Giles Barnes regained the Dynamo’s lead in the 40th minute. Earning a set piece on the edge of the Quakes 18-yard box, Barnes curled his attempt through the San Jose’s wall and into the bottom right corner, lifting the Dynamo to a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.

The Dynamo extended their lead in the 53rd minute through the head of center back David Horst. Second half substitute Brad Davis whipped his corner kick service toward a rising Horst who redirected his snapping header past goalkeeper substitute Bryan Meredith for a 3-1 lead.

San Jose got one back through Jahn in the 57th minute. Thompson found Jahn in stride with a nifty ball behind the Dynamo defense. With time to pick his head up, the third-year striker tucked away his chance past goalkeeper substitute Joe Willis for a 3-2 Houston advantage.

Both sides exchanged chances in the final stanza, none more threatening than a whipped-in service from Matias Perez Garcia in the 76th minute. Perez Garcia, who earned San Jose a free kick at the Dynamo endline, dipped his cross toward the darting run of Marvell Wynne. With the ball falling to his waist side, Wynne was unable to redirect his attempt past Willis for the game’s equalizer.

The Earthquakes return to preseason action against Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 4:00 p.m. PT at Kino Sports Complex.
