On this date in club history, the Quakes (1-1-3) made the cross-country trip to East Rutherford to take on Eastern Conference foe New York/New Jersey MetroStars (1-1-2) at Giants Stadium. After drawing with second-year MLS club Real Salt Lake in their prior fixture, Ronald Cerritos and the Quakes were itching for maximum points against Chris Leitch, the current Quakes Academy Director, and New York, who were coming off of a commanding 3-1 road win against Colorado. Riding on the momentum of three goals in the first four matches of the 2005 campaign, Cerritos made it four in five games against New York as he headed home his 60th minute goal past MetroStars goalkeeper Zach Wells off of a flank service from Brad Davis.
San Jose goalkeeper Pat Onstad preserved his second shutout of the season after tallying four saves on the afternoon. The club improved to (2-1-3) on the season and concluded an undefeated two-game road trip.
