Last MLS Game
Portland Timbers 1, Earthquakes 0; July 5, 2015; Providence Park in Portland, Ore.
The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the Portland Timbers 1-0 at Providence Park, with the deciding goal coming in the 91st minute. Due to two injuries and a call up to the U.S. National Team, San Jose was forced to play without all three of its Designated Players for the first time this season, including leading scorer and U.S. international forward Chris Wondolowski and midfielder Matias Perez Garcia, who leads the team in assists. The Quakes were also without midfielders Sanna Nyassi and Cordell Cato, who were absent due to yellow card accumulation and a call up to the Trinidad and Tobago National Team, respectively. In the 19th minute, Quakes keeper David Bingham made a clutch save to keep the score level. Sprinting up the left side of the pitch, Portland defender Jorge Villafana pulled the trigger on a left-footed shot near the edge of the penalty area that was seemingly destined for the far post. Bingham lunged to his left and got enough on it to put the ball out of play for a corner kick. Five minutes later, San Jose nearly took a 1-0 lead. Midfielder Shea Salinas looped in a lofting corner kick and forward Mark Sherrod was the first man to it. He headed the ball to the far post, beating the keeper, but was denied by a defender positioned on the goal line. In the 57th minute, midfielder Tommy Thompson created a chance for himself. Dribbling in the right side of the penalty area with several Timbers defenders around him, Thompson snuck a quick shot across his body that slipped past the keeper. However, the ball rolled just wide left of the far post and out for a goal kick. The Timbers broke the deadlock in the 91st minute. Following a free kick, the ball was batted around in front of goal before Quakes midfielder Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi went to clear it. Portland midfielder Jack Jewsbury jumped in front of the clearance attempt and deflected the ball over Bingham and into the net.

Last Game vs. Dynamo
Earthquakes 1, Houston Dynamo 0; May 5, 2015; BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas
The San Jose Earthquakes used a goal by forward Adam Jahn and a clean sheet to earn three points on the road against the Houston Dynamo. San Jose got on the board in the 54th minute. Midfielder Matias Perez Garcia took a quick free kick, catching several Dynamo defenders off guard. The set piece was driven from the right side of the pitch to the six-yard box and was firmly headed into the back of the net by forward Adam Jahn, marking his first goal since May 8, 2013, against Toronto FC. Just three minutes later, Houston seemed primed to level the score when midfielder Oscar Boniek Garcia drew a penalty. However, Bingham came through in the clutch once again, saving the set piece driven low and to his left by forward Giles Barnes. The Earthquakes continued their excellent run of play defensively for the remainder of the match, preserving the clean sheet and departing BBVA Compass Stadium with three points.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
Finding Consistency
The Earthquakes have sent out the same starting back line [Marvell Wynne, Victor Bernardez, Clarence Goodson, Jordan Stewart] and goalkeeper [David Bingham] in each of the past nine matches, going 4-2-3 over that span. The club has allowed more than one goal just once in those matches and has had four clean sheets.
Wondolowski Scores for U.S. in Gold Cup Tune-up Against Guatemala
Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski scored his 10th goal for the United States on July 3 in a friendly match against Guatemala in Nashville in a 4-0 victory. Wondolowski is one of 23 players selected by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann to represent the United States at the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Wondolowski was part of the U.S. Gold Cup roster that won the previous tournament in 2013, finishing with a perfect 6-0-0 record. Wondolowski scored five goals, including a first-half hat trick in their opening match against Belize, to tie for the tournament’s Golden Boot. He also made three appearances and one start for the U.S. during their run to the Gold Cup Final in 2011. The U.S. faces Honduras (July 7), Haiti (July 10) and Panama (July 13) in group play.
Three Straight Over Houston?
The Quakes are currently riding a two-game winning streak over Houston, including a 1-0 victory at BBVA Compass Stadium earlier this season. Forward Adam Jahn headed home the game-winning goal off a Matias Perez Garcia free kick in that game.
First Start of Season
Earthquakes midfielder Leandro Barrera made his first regular season start with San Jose against Portland on July 5. Barrera played 72 minutes, his most since October 26, 2014 as a member of the now-defunct Chivas USA.
Midfield Magician
Quakes midfielder Matias Perez Garcia has registered six assists in his last seven MLS matches and San Jose has gone undefeated in those seven contests (4-0-3). In the process, he has boosted his game-winning assist total to four, the most in Major League Soccer. The club is also 4–0 this year when MPG records an assist or scores [at HOU (5/5); vs. CLB (5/16); at SEA (6/20); vs. LA (6/27)].
Strong Form
While San Jose is currently sitting in seventh place in the Western Conference, numerous factors suggest they have been better than the table indicates. The Earthquakes have played fewer matches than all but one team currently ahead of them in the WC playoff race, including having multiple games in hand on four of the six clubs they’re chasing. San Jose has also played 10 of their 17 matches thus far on the road. The Quakes are on a hot streak that dates back to May 1, with the club going 4-2-4 over the last 10 games.
Tough to Break Down at Avaya
The Quakes have not allowed a goal in the last three MLS matches at Avaya Stadium [vs. VAN (4/11); vs. CLB (5/16); vs. DAL (6/7)], a scoreless streak currently at 316 minutes. The team hasn’t allowed a goal at their new home since the first half against Real Salt Lake on April 5.
Undefeated Streak at Home
The San Jose Earthquakes are 4-1-2 at home this season and are currently riding a five-game unbeaten streak at home in league play, with three of those games being played at Avaya Stadium, one at Levi’s® Stadium and one at Stanford Stadium.
Stingy Defense
The San Jose Earthquakes have held their opponents to one or fewer goals in 13 of their 17 matches this season, including nine of the last 10. They have also kept clean sheets in four of the past nine games.
Quakes Among MLS Leaders
Currently, several Earthquakes rank near or at the top of numerous statistical categories. Among them are:

Greatest Six-Year Span in MLS History
Including nine goals so far this year, Chris Wondolowski has tallied 95 goals since the start of the 2010 season, the most by any player over a six-year span in MLS history. Wondolowski still has the remainder of this season to add to his league record. Only three other players ever registered more than 80 goals in a six-year span – Taylor Twellman (91 from 2002-07), Roy Lassiter (88 from 1996-01) and Carlos Ruiz (81 from 2002-07).
MLS Goals Since 2010
Chris Wondolowski has been by far the league’s most efficient striker since 2010, leading the league in goals during that time span:
1. Chris Wondolowski - 95 goals
2. Alvaro Saborio  - 63
3. Robbie Keane - 59
4. Thierry Henry - 51
5. Kei Kamara - 49
6. Landon Donovan - 48
7. Sebastian Le Toux - 47

Teams under head coach Dominic Kinnear are 122-10-43 when scoring first, a .820 winning percentage. As head coach of the Earthquakes, Kinnear has only lost one game when his team scored first, a 26-1-8 record overall.
Halftime Success
Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 108-3-23 when leading at the half, including a 4-0-2 mark so far in 2015. They were 6-0-2 in 2014, 6-0-3 in 2013 and an impressive 12-0-1 in 2012, with the only draw coming against Portland on Oct. 27 at JELD-WEN Field. In 2011, the club was 4-2-2, 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 6-1-0 in 2008, 7-0-3 in 2005, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage.
Making the First One Count
The Earthquakes are 106-12-31 since 2001 when scoring the first goal. The club is 4-0-1 so far in 2015, after going 5-1-4 in 2014. They were 11-1-3 when scoring first in 2013. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (13-0-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first.
