SAN JOSE, Calif. -
The San Jose Earthquakes dueled with Manchester United on Tuesday night at Avaya Stadium as part of the International Champions Cup North America Presented by Guinness, falling 3-1 to the English Premier League side. San Jose midfielder Fatai Alashe tallied the club's lone goal, becoming the first Earthquake to score against United in club history.

Manchester United broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute. Forward Wayne Rooney sent midfielder Ashley Young down the left flank with a long through ball. Young cut the ball back and passed to midfielder Juan Mata, who sent a flick off the far post and in.

Five minutes later, midfielder Memphis Depay intercepted a pass and was able to finish off a one-on-one with Quakes keeper David Bingham.

In the 42nd minute, San Jose cut the deficit in half. Midfielder Shea Salinas slipped by his defender near the corner flag and laid a pass off to midfielder Fatai Alashe, who slotted his first-timed attempt past keeper Sam Johnstone.

At halftime, the clubs made numerous lineup changes. San Jose substituted nine of its 10 field players, leaving only Alashe, while United replaced all 10.

United doubled its advantage in the 61st minute on the head of midfielder Andreas Pereira. Midfielder Ander Herrera laid the ball off for Jesse Lingard. His cross was headed by midfielder Andreas Pereira past Bingham and into the back of the net.

The Earthquakes newest signing, Marc Pelosi, nearly gave the home side a second goal in his team debut. In the 71st minute, he took control of the ball, cut onto his left foot and blasted a shot from 20 yards out that sailed just high.

The Quakes next MLS match is against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday, July 26 at BC Place, beginning at 4:00 p.m. PT. The match will air live on CSN California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH DOMINIC KINNEAR
On match:
"At times we got close enough to where we could make some tackles. Obviously scored a goal was a good lift for the team. I think we kind of made it easy on them with the giveaways that led to some of the goals but I think the guys put in a great effort tonight."
On debut of Marc Pelosi:
"I thought he did OK. It would've been nice to see him score that goal. Got a good early tackle there. I think it kind of got him into the match a little bit and he looked comfortable which was nice to see."
On Fatai Alashe's goal:
"We had a couple of opportunities to get in there. I think we rushed ourselves a little bit and that was one of the few times we got deep into their area. We had a little bit of composure and it paid off for us and great goal by Fatai."
On play of Tommy Thompson:
"The one thing we say about Tommy is that he's very confident, he's unafraid no matter what the occasion is or who the opponent is. I think he showed that again tonight."
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER MARC PELOSI
On shot attempt:
"Disappointed a little bit because I should've finished that shot. I think it was because I was deciding between shooting and dribbling and I was leaning back a little. I connected with it well but it was just a little too high. I wish I scored that one."
On playing alongside Tommy Thompson:
"I've known Tommy for a little bit. In training, obviously, we're two of the young guys. We like to play. We like to play with each other, we're always warming up together and I think we have a good connection going and he's really fun to play with."
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER FATAI ALASHE
On MLS closing talent gap on European soccer:
"It went as I expected from a talent level stand point. Take nothing away from those guys, but we have a great group also that do well to compete against whoever it is we are playing that day. I think playing against Manchester United definitely helps the development process. We have guys that rally around each other and make you play better. It helps in matches like this where you play tough and stay competitive."
On juggling MLS, friendly matches:
"It's been tough, but for the most part it's been really fun. I've enjoyed it all. This summer has gone by pretty quickly for me. I've tried to slow things down a bit and stay focused on the moment. I want to keep working hard to get better and hopefully more of that stuff will come."
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER MATIAS PEREZ GARCIA
On match:
"The result was negative, but we were competitive for most of the match. We had some miscommunication that led to a goal. We had fun, but have room to grow. We now have to shift our focus to this weekend in Vancouver."
On Manchester United:
"It's not every day you play against Manchester United, so you have to have fun. It was a magical night for both clubs to play here at Avaya [Stadium]. They are a great team and one you always keep an eye on when following world soccer. At the same time, once the whistle blows you just want to win and you do what you can to get the result."
