Chris Wondolowski - Kei Kamara - San Jose Earthquakes - New England Revolution - 2016

When the New England Revolution come to town on Wednesday night, they will be bringing experienced striker Kei Kamara with them. Kamara and Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski have a lot in common, but also are different in many ways. Let’s compare and contrast two of the most dangerous goal scorers in Major League Soccer history.

Similar: Wondolowski, 33, and Kamara, 32 in a week, entered the league around the same time. Wondo made two appearances for San Jose during his rookie campaign in 2005 while Kamara appeared in 19 games for Columbus in his debut season of 2006.

Different:
The duo entered the league with very different expectations. Kamara was the ninth overall selection by Columbus and was asked to play right away. Wondolowski was the 41st pick and spent much of his early years in the reserve league.

Similar: Both forwards know how to put the ball in the back of the net. Wondolowski has scored 118 goals in 249 career MLS appearances while Kamara has scored 83 goals in 248 appearances.

Different:
Kamara, who stands 6’3, is often the target for set pieces and aerial crosses. Wondolowski, who is more than capable of scoring a header himself, has earned a reputation with his off-the-ball movement and clinical finishing with either foot.

Similar: Both players were traded from the Dynamo during the 2009 season, with Wondolowski getting sent to the Quakes in June and Kamara to Kansas City in September. The two briefly played alongside one another, taking the field together twice. Wondolowski also replaced Kamara as a substitute twice and vice versa once.

Different: Wondolowski found a home in Major League Soccer and has chosen to keep it that way. The Danville native never voluntarily left his hometown club, but rather spent three and a half seasons in Houston due to the team relocating. Kamara has bounced around a bit, appearing for Columbus, San Jose, Houston, Kansas City and New England. He also tested the waters in Europe, playing for both Norwich City and Middlesbrough in England.
