Source: Tottenham adding SJ date to U.S. tour

Mexican star Giovani dos Santos could be part of Tottenham Hotspur's touring squad this summer.

The East Coast and Midwest are getting their fair share of summer bookings by major European clubs this summer, but it looks like the West Coast has finally secured its first big date.

A source close to Tottenham Hotspur told MLSsoccer.com on Wednesday that the North London club will make a stop in Northern California to play the San Jose Earthquakes on July 17 at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Spurs’ West Coast swing comes just before the club is set to participate in the New York Football Challenge at Red Bull Arena the following week, a tournament involving EPL rivals Manchester City, the New York Red Bulls and possibly Portuguese power Sporting Lisbon.

Tottenham will bring their entire squad for their U.S. trip, the source said, barring “one or two players” who might still be recovering from late World Cup duty. The World Cup final is set for July 11 in Johannesburg.

Among Spurs’ big draws are English national-teamers Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe, and Irish star Robbie Keane, who is on loan to Celtic until June. The biggest draw in Northern California, however, will no doubt be Mexican attacker Giovani dos Santos, who is currently on loan to Galatasaray of Turkey.

San Jose and Tottenham Hotspur have a working partnership that has begun to blossom more fully recently. Earthquakes players spent 10 days of preseason training camp at Spurs’ Chigwell facility in outer London last month.

The Earthquakes declined to comment when contacted by MLSsoccer.com.
