After two weeks off during the World Cup break, the San Jose Earthquakes resume MLS play against Real Salt Lake on Friday, June 25 at 6 p.m. PT at Rio Tinto Stadium live on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and 1220 KDOW. The Quakes dropped their season-opener to RSL 3-0 on March 27 at Buck Shaw Stadium. On April 14, the Quakes fell to RSL in a penalty shootout at Buck Shaw Stadium in a U.S. Open Play-in match. The Quakes are hosting a viewing party for the match at 6 p.m. at Game On Sports & Pizza in San Jose, where fans can watch the game, meet some members of the Shakers Squad, participate in a raffle and take advantage of some food and drink specials.

The San Jose Earthquakes earned a 6-5 penalty-kick shootout win after battling Chivas USA to a scoreless draw for 90 minutes in the inaugural Sacramento Cup. Jon Busch kept a clean sheet and made a kick save on Chivas USA keeper Dan Kennedy during the shootout to spark San Jose in the win. The back four of Steven Beitashour, Ike Opara, Bobby Burling and Justin Morrow kept Busch's net tidy, allowing just one shot on goal. Both sides converted their first five attempts in the shootout. Chris Wondolowski, Ramiro Corrales, Javier Robles, Ryan Johnson and Ramon Sanchez lined up for San Jose's five while Gerson Mayen, Carlos Borja, Maicon Santos, Michael Umana and Jose Macotelo made good for Chivas USA. Jason Hernandez scored the decisive tally after Busch's save to win the Sacramento Cup.

The San Jose Earthquakes lost to Real Salt Lake for the second time in 2010 at Buck Shaw Stadium, this one a 5-3 decision in penalties in a U.S. Open Play-in match in front of 2,718. After midfielder Arturo Alvarez missed the first attempt for San Jose, RSL made all five of its shots to win. Will Johnson, Kyle Beckerman, Robbie Findley, Robbie Russell and Andy Williams scored for RSL, while Joey Gjertsen, Brandon McDonald and Ramon Sanchez converted for San Jose. RSL took an early 1-0 lead in the 7th minute when Findley took advantage of a San Jose defensive miscue and beat goaltender Jon Busch, who was making his San Jose debut. The Earthquakes almost scored the equalizer in the 27th minute when Gjertsen’s shot off a RSL turnover hit the post. RSL extended its lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute when Nelson Gonzalez converted on a 25-yard free kick – the 21-year-old’s first goal in a RSL uniform. The Quakes cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 68th minute when Chris Leitch scored from 12 yards out. In the 88th minute, Alvarez provided some late-game heroics with a goal to tie the game at 2-2 and force overtime. San Jose rookie Justin Morrow scored the third consecutive goal for the Quakes in the 103rd minute, yet RSL tied the game three minutes later on a goal by Nat Borchers.

Quakes Acquire Sam Cronin from Toronto FC
The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that they have acquired midfielder Sam Cronin from Toronto FC in exchange for allocation money. Cronin, the second overall draft pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, has appeared in 33 games in his career and scored one goal and notched five assists. Cronin had a standout rookie season in MLS in 2009, starting 26 games and logging 2,363 minutes in central midfield. He scored his first goal against the New York Red Bulls in a 2-1 win in June and also recorded four assists for the season. He helped TFC post the team’s best regular season record in its history. He has played six games this season for Toronto. The Winston-Salem native was noticed by United States men’s national team coach Bob Bradley, and was selected for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup roster. He appeared in two matches in the tournament. He earned his first cap on July 11 in a group match against Haiti at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., and came on as an 80th minute substitute in the Gold Cup final against Mexico. Cronin was drafted second overall by Toronto following a standout collegiate career at Wake Forest University. He played in 98 career games with the Demon Deacons and helped lead them to the 2007 NCAA Championship. He was a two-time All-American and was named a finalist for the Hermann Trophy in 2008. He scored 10 goals as a senior, while also recording four assists. He was a teammate of Quakes rookie defender Ike Opara during his time with the Demon Deacons.
Quakes in Sacramento
The Earthquakes are still unbeaten in Sacramento in their history following their penalty-kick shootout win over Chivas USA on June 12. The team faced CD Olimpia from Honduras in a CONCACAF Champions Cup match at a sold-out Sheldon Florin Community Stadium on March 16, 2002. Landon Donovan, Ian Russell and Jeff Agoos scored for the Quakes in a 3-1 win that moved San Jose into the quarterfinals of the Champions Cup. Ramiro Corrales is the only current Quakes player that appeared in that match.
Wondolowski Among MLS Leaders
Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski is currently tied for third in scoring in MLS with Juan Pablo Angel of the New York Red Bulls and Kei Kamara of the Kansas City Wizards with six goals. The six goals are one more than his previous career high of five in 2008, when he split time with Houston and San Jose.
Convey Remains Near Top of Leaderboard
Quakes midfielder Bobby Convey sits alone in second in the league in assists with seven. This total ties his career high, which he matched in 2001 for D.C. United. Convey trails only Galaxy midfielder, Landon Donovan, who has nine assists.
SF Bay Area Among Highest in Television Ratings for World Cup Matches
The San Francisco Bay Area is among the highest media markets in television ratings, according to Nielsen Media Research for the World Cup matches including the United States. The US match against England on Saturday, June 12 earned an 11.2 rating, and the US/Slovenia match picked up a 5.7, both of which rank in the top five in the country. The United States face a pivotal match on Wednesday at 7 a.m. PT against Algeria, and will advance with a win, or a draw, depending on the England/Slovenia match.

Current Earthquakes midfielder/forward Ryan Johnson played for Real Salt Lake in 2006. RSL selected Johnson in the third round of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. He played seven games and made one start. He is now second all-time in saves (1,154), second all-time in shutouts (73) and fourth all-time in wins (103) in league history. For San Jose, Cannon is first in club history as a goalkeeper in starts (170), minutes played (15,471), saves (686), wins (65), and shutouts (43) and second in appearances (170), goals against average (1.33), and saves percentage (73.4). He also holds the team's all-time record for saves in a game with 12 on July 8, 2000 at Colorado.
Corrales Among All-Time Leaders
Ramiro Corrales has the most appearances in franchise history with 178 and has made 162 starts, while logging 14,405 minutes played as a member of the Quakes. He is now alone in second place in franchise history in starts, third in all-time in club history for minutes played and ninth in assists with 21.
Quakes Host Club Partner Tottenham Hotspur July 17
The San Jose Earthquakes will play club partner Tottenham Hotspur from the English Premier League (EPL) on Saturday, July 17 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The kick-off time will be announced at a later date. Season ticket holders should use their Bonus Game “B” ticket for the match. Tickets are on sale now and range from $20-$50 and can be purchased by calling (800) 225-2277 or by logging on to sjearthquakes.com. Tottenham Hotspur, also known as Spurs, signed a club partnership agreement in 2008 with the objective of creating a long-term bond between the two clubs. The relationship focuses on both soccer and commercial development by exchanging and implementing the best practices from both organizations. The partnership to date has seen Earthquakes technical staff visiting Spurs Lodge on numerous occasions, with the team using the Tottenham Hotspur training facility as a base for this season’s pre-season preparations.

Quakes Individual Tickets
The San Jose Earthquakes announced that individual tickets for all 2010 Earthquakes home games are now on sale. The Quakes significantly reduced prices for the 2010 season with prices ranging from $20-50. Tickets for the much anticipated 2010 campaign are available online at sjearthquakes.com or by calling 1-800-225-2277. The new, reduced prices for the 2010 season are as follows; Premier Midfield $50 per game ($60 in 2009), Center Circle $35 per game ($40 in 2009), Sideline $25 per game ($35 in 2009) and Goal View $20 per game ($22 in 2009).
