The San Jose Earthquakes dropped a 1-0 decision to the Houston Dynamo at home on Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 10,597 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Houston defender Andrew Hainault’s 23rd minute goal off a Brad Davis corner was the difference between the two sides. The Dynamo outshot the Earthquakes by a healthy margin of 19-10. San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch came up big with some clutch saves, finishing the game with a total of six stops. The Earthquakes nearly tied the game with a couple of late scoring chances, yet midfielder Bobby Convey’s shot hit the post and forward Chris Wondolowski’s volley went over the crossbar.

Chivas USA collected a victory on April 24, holding off a late push from the visiting San Jose Earthquakes for a 3-2 victory at The Home Depot Center. Goals from Sacha Kljestan, Justin Braun and Chukwudi Chijindu were the difference as the Red-and-White claimed their second consecutive win at home. It was Kljestan who found the back of the net first. San Jose equalized just before halftime with a 41st-minute penalty kick. Chris Wondolowski netted from the spot for the visitors, slotting a low ball into the left-hand corner of the net after he was taken down in the box by Jonathan Bornstein. Any momentum the Quakes had going into the second half was quickly squelched by Justin Braun in the 54th minute. The big Chivas striker got onto the end of an incisive cross from Mariano Trujillo to head the ball past a diving Cannon and into the far left side of the net. It was Braun’s fourth consecutive goal against the Earthquakes. Substitute striker Chukwudi Chijindu added a third notch for the Red-and-White in the 88th minute after collecting a long pass from Lahoud and outpacing Steven Beitashour. The SoCal native calmly slipped the ball under Cannon, who had charged off his line. The Quakes swarmed in the game’s closing minutes, getting a goal of their own in the 92nd minute when defender Steven Beitashour hit a speculative shot from beyond the 18-yard line that sailed over the Chivas USA defense but dipped under the bar at the last moment.

The San Jose Earthquakes pulled out a 1-0 win over the Kansas City Wizards on Aug. 14 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Chris Wondolowski supplied the only goal, as he found the back of the net in the 35th minute after a delicate chip from the newest Earthquakes midfielder, Khari Stephenson. Wondolowski was free at the back post and finished with a volley to put the Quakes in front. Joe Cannon returned as Quakes goalkeeper and posted a shutout, his sixth this season, allowing San Jose to extend their home unbeaten streak against Kansas City to 13 games, which dates back to August of 2000.

Quakes Host Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Oct. 20
The San Jose Earthquakes will host Breast Cancer Awareness Night in their last home game of the 2010 regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 20 when they host Chivas USA at Buck Shaw Stadium at 7 p.m. PT in conjunction with the MLS W.O.R.K.S. Breast Cancer Awareness initiative. In collaboration with MLS corporate partners adidas, American Airlines and Gatorade, the Quakes match on Oct. 20 with Chivas USA will be played with a commemorative pink adidas Jabulani match ball. Buck Shaw Stadium will highlight the campaign with pink co-branded American Airlines field boards, and players will use pink sideline towels provided by Gatorade. In addition, the Earthquakes players will wear a special pink MLS W.O.R.K.S. ribbon patch on their jerseys, pink adidas sweat bands and goalkeepers will use pink gloves to showcase their support.

Earthquakes, Club Quake and SSV Team up for LLS Light the Night Walk
The San Jose Earthquakes have partnered with their supporter’s group, Club Quake, and the Soccer Silicon Valley Community Foundation for the third straight year to participate in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk on Saturday, Oct. 23 in downtown San Jose. Earthquakes players, members of the team’s front office, along with Earthquakes fans will walk in the event that raises funds and awareness for blood cancers. This year the team will walk in honor of former Earthquakes player Joe Vide, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma earlier this year. The Light The Night Walk festivities will be held at Arena Green Park in San Jose. Participants walk carrying illuminated balloons to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer. All funds raised through the Light The Night Walk support LLS’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

Wondolowski One Shy of Club Record for Goals in a Season, Moves Up All-Time Lists
Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski scored his 13th and 14th goals of the season in San Jose’s 2-0 win over D.C. United on Saturday, Oct. 9, one shy of the franchise single season record of 15 set by Ronald Cerritos in 1999. Wondolowski’s 14 goals are tied for the second-most scored in a single season with Ariel Graziani’s 14 goals scored in 2002. Wondolowksi is now tied with Earthquakes teammate Ryan Johnson for seventh place on the club’s all-time goals scored list with 17. Finally, Wondolowski moved past Dwayne De Rosario and sits third all-time in franchise history with nine career game-winning goals.
Wondolowski Ranks Second in MLS in Goals Scored, First in Game-Winning Goals
With two goals against D.C. United on Oct. 9, Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski currently ranks second in MLS with 14 goals this season, behind Edson Buddle of the Los Angeles Galaxy (17). Additionally, Wondolowski leads the league in game-winning goals with eight.
Convey Tied for Fourth in MLS in Assists, Tied for First in Game-Winning Assists
Earthquakes midfielder Bobby Convey is currently tied for fourth in MLS in assists with 10, along with Brad Davis of the Houston Dynamo, Fredy Montero of Seattle Sounders FC and Patrick Nyarko of the Chicago Fire. Landon Donovan of the Los Angeles Galaxy leads the league with 15 assists, followed by David Ferreira of FC Dallas (13) and Sebastien Le Toux of the Philadelphia Union (11). Additionally, Convey is tied for first in the league with five game-winning assists along with Donovan and Ferreira. Finally, Convey’s 10 assists are the highest by an Earthquakes player since 2005 when Dwayne De Rosario notched 13. The club record for assists in a season is 14, achieved by Eddie Lewis in both 1997 and 1999.
Quakes Tie Shutout Record
The Earthquakes tied the franchise record for shutouts in a season with their 12th clean sheet of the season on Saturday, Oct. 9 against D.C. United. The record was set in 2005 when the Earthquakes won the lone Supporter’s Shield in club history. Additionally, the Earthquakes are now one of seven teams in the league with double digit shutouts. Real Salt Lake has 14, the Los Angeles Galaxy and New York Red Bulls have 12, the Columbus Crew and Seattle Sounders FC have 11, and FC Dallas has 10.
Busch Among MLS Leaders in Multiple Categories
San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch currently ranks fourth in goals against average (0.94), third in saves percentage (78.7), tied for eighth in shutouts (6) and ninth in saves (74) in MLS. Busch has amassed a record of 6-5-5 in 16 games this season.

San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch is among the all-time league leaders in a number of categories. Busch ranks ninth in games played in goal (163), ninth in games started in goal (162), ninth in minutes played in goal (14,630), ninth in wins (66), ninth in saves (681) and eighth in shutouts (52).
Ramiro Corrales Returns for the Earthquakes
After missing the last 10 games due to a left knee sprain, San Jose defender Ramiro Corrales returned to the field on Saturday, Oct. 16 in a 1-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo at Buck Shaw Stadium. Corrales entered the game as a substitute in the 61st minute for defender Chris Leitch. Corrales injured the knee in the Earthquakes’ 1-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 7 at Dick Sporting Goods Park. With 185 appearances with the Earthquakes in his career, Corrales is the club’s all-time leader in appearances, and ranks second behind goalkeeper Joe Cannon in minutes played (14,964) and games started (168).
McDonald Misses Houston Game
San Jose Earthquakes defender Brandon McDonald was forced to sit out of Saturday’s 1-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo due to red card suspension. McDonald earned a red card in the Earthquakes’ 2-0 win over D.C. United on Oct. 9 in the 8th minute. Up until that point, McDonald was the lone Earthquakes player to play in every game this season. Since the team returned in 2008, only two players have played in every game in a season. Forward Ryan Johnson played in all 30 games last season, and goalkeeper Joe Cannon played in all 30 games in 2008.
San Jose Falls at Home to Houston For the First Time
With a 1-0 loss on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Buck Shaw Stadium, the San Jose Earthquakes lost a home game against the Houston Dynamo for the first time in franchise history. Entering the game, the Earthquakes had a record of 2-0-1 against Houston at home. Earlier this season, the Earthquakes became the first of the two teams to record a win on the road with a 2-1 victory on Sunday, Sept. 5 at Robertson Stadium.
Cronin to Make 50th Career Appearance
Should midfielder Sam Cronin play in the Earthquakes’ game on Wednesday, Oct. 20 against Chivas USA, it will be the 50th appearance of his career. Cronin, selected with the number two overall pick by Toronto FC in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft out of Wake Forest, appeared in 27 games with Toronto in 2009, and six in 2010 before being acquired by San Jose on Jun. 21. Since joining the Earthquakes, Cronin has appeared in 16 games.

The San Jose Earthquakes will be looking for their first victory against Chivas USA since returning to MLS in 2008 when they face off on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at Buck Shaw Stadium at 7 p.m. PT. Earthquakes Midfielder Joey Gjertsen Undergoes Successful Surgery on his Right Knee
San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Joey Gjertsen underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Friday, Oct. 15. Gjertsen had the surgery performed by Dr. Michael Oberlander at Sequoia Surgical Pavilion in Walnut Creek. The Tacoma, Wash. Native last appeared as a substitute on Sept. 25 in a 3-2 win over Toronto FC. He has made 18 appearances in his first MLS season, starting 16 games, with one goal and one assist.
Quakes Currently Eighth in Playoff Standings
The San Jose Earthquakes currently hold the eighth spot in the playoff standings with 43 points with two games remaining. The Earthquakes trail the Colorado Rapids by two points after the Rapids defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-1 on Saturday, Oct. 16. Should the playoffs begin today, the Earthquakes would move into the Eastern Conference Bracket and play the New York Red Bulls.

Quakes Still Solid in One-Goal Games
Despite falling 1-0 to the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Buck Shaw Stadium, the San Jose Earthquakes still possess a solid record in one-goal games. This season, the Earthquakes are 9-4-0 with a .692 winning percentage in one-goal games, good enough for sixth in MLS.
