It has been an October to remember for San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski.
His six goals in the final month of the MLS regular season helped the Quakes clinch a playoff berth, they earned him the MLS Golden Boot and on Wednesday they made him October Player of the Month as voted on by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).
Wondolowski scored all six of his team’s goals in October and earned two Player of the Week honors for his efforts. The run started with a 2-0 road win at D.C. United, where Wondo’s brace allowed the Quakes to clinch a postseason berth for the first time since the club was reborn three years ago.
He did one better on Oct. 20 at home against Chivas USA, as his hat trick in a 3-0 win catapulted him to a share of the league’s scoring lead alongside Edson Buddle.
Three days later, Wondolowski netted what turned out to be an insignificant goal in a 4-1 loss at Kansas City, but it was enough to give him the lead for good in the chase for the MLS Golden Boot with 18 goals.
The local boy done good story will continue this Saturday night as the Earthquakes welcome Rafa Márquez and the New York Red Bulls for the first leg of their first-round playoff series (10 p.m. ET, TeleFutura).
