Quakes to host Fire in USOC Qualifier on May 24

SAN JOSE, Calif. – After defeating the Portland Timbers on May 3 at JELD-WEN Field 1-0 on an overtime goal by Ike Opara, the San Jose Earthquakes now host the Chicago Fire on Tuesday, May 24 at Buck Shaw Stadium in another Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Play-in game. The match will kick off at 7:30 p.m. PT. With a win against the Fire, the Quakes would advance to the Round of 16 of the main draw of the U.S. Open Cup.

Season ticket holders should use their Bonus Game “A” ticket for the match. Tickets for the game go on sale to the general public Thursday, May 12 at 10 a.m. PT at SJEarthquakes.com and by calling (800) 225-2277. Prices for individual seats range from $20 to $50.

San Jose has never faced the Fire in a Play-in match, but did play them once in the main draw of the U.S. Open Cup. The Fire defeated the Quakes 4-3 on penalty kicks, following a 1-1 tie in regulation and overtime. The match was played on July 22, 1998 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

The Earthquakes have participated in the U.S. Open Cup eight times in their history, posting a 10-8 overall record. The team reached the quarterfinals seven times and advanced to the semifinals for the first time in team history in 2004. In their last appearance in the tournament in 2005, the Quakes beat the Portland Timbers (USL-1) in the Round of 16 before losing to the Los Angeles Galaxy, 2-1, in the quarterfinals.
