The San Jose Earthquakes raised over $6,000 for charity during its matches against the New York Red Bulls on July 2 at Stanford Stadium and the Philadelphia Union on July 9 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Using money earned through separate promotions, the Earthquakes will donate $1,020 to Wounded Warrior Project, $2,500 to the American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter and $2,500 to the ALS Association.
The money raised for the American Red Cross and the ALS Association originated from San Jose's A&W Root Beer Float Night before kickoff on July 9. Local celebrities, including Earthquakes players Chris Wondolowski, Steven Lenhart and David Bingham, scooped ice cream, poured root beer and collected donations that amounted to $3,350 and a total of 1,000 root beer floats. Additionally, the Earthquakes donated $1,650 from its community fund for a total of $5,000 split 50-50 between the American Red Cross and the ALS Association.
“We are very pleased with the outcome of the A&W Root Beer Float Night and were glad to be a part of the fundraiser,” said Sky Pace, Region Cold Drink Manager for the 7up Bottling Company of the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group. “We love any opportunity to help out the community, and the American Red Cross and ALS Association are both great organizations.”
The Earthquakes also raised $1,020 for Wounded Warrior Project through a Facebook-oriented promotion on July 2. San Jose offered a $1 donation to WWP for each new Facebook 'Like' the club's official team page received on the day of their big match aganst the Red Bulls.
