The San Jose Earthquakes will open play in the 2011 Generation adidas Cup in North Texas on Monday.

Formerly known as the MLS SUM Cup, the event is in its fifth year and has developed the reputation as a showcase for future MLS signees and an opportunity for MLS clubs to scout the next generation of talent in the academy system. The tournament will bring together U-17 squads from 16 different MLS Development Academies.

This year’s Generation adidas Cup kicks off tonight with San Jose playing Houston at 6 p.m. PT. On Tuesday, July 26, San Jose will face the Columbus Crew at 6:15 p.m. PT. The first round will wrap up on Thursday, July 28 as San Jose gets another crack at D.C. United at 4:30 p.m. PT.

In last year’s tournament, San Jose was 0-3-0 in its first official action as a member of the U.S. academy system. On the first day, the Earthquakes managed to score two goals but were ultimately succumbed to Colorado 3-2. Israel Ayala scored the first goal after he stole the ball from a Colorado defender and fired a shot past the goalkeeper from 25 yards. Sam Engs accounted for the second goal after heading the ball past Alex Chapin at the back post in the 51st minute. The Earthquakes had worse luck on the second day as a handball called in the box gave Chicago a penalty kick for the only goal scored in the match. On day three, a strong D.C. United squad held San Jose scoreless in the final match of the tournament for San Jose.
