Earthquakes Add Ecuadorian Forward Edmundo Zura
The San Jose Earthquakes announced today the acquisition of Ecuadorian International forward Edmundo Zura on loan from El Nacional. He will be added to the roster upon receipt of his P-1 Visa. Per league and team policy terms of the deal were not disclosed. Most recently, the 27-year-old made 30 appearances and scored 10 goals for El Nacional since joining the club in 2009. The powerful striker had four goals and one assist for La Maquina Roja, a member of the Ecuadorian First Division, in 2011.


Sellout Streak Continues
Saturday’s attendance of 10,525 marked the third consecutive sellout at Buck Shaw Stadium. It was also the sixth sellout of the season, not including the 41,028 that were on hand to watch the Earthquakes take on the Red Bulls at Stanford Stadium on July 2. The Earthquakes recorded sellouts on March 19 vs. Real Salt Lake, April 23 vs. Chivas USA, June 25 vs. LA Galaxy, July 30 vs. D.C. United, Aug. 6 vs. Portland Timbers and Saturday against the Colorado Rapids. San Jose’s next home date is Fiesta Latina night, presented by Xfinity, on Sept. 10 against the Chicago Fire. Gjertsen Scores First Goal of 2011
Joey Gjertsen scored his first goal of 2011 against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday. He headed home a deflected Chris Wondolowski shot to give the Quakes a 1-0 lead. It was his second career goal in two years with the Quakes. His first career goal came on May 8, 2010 in a 4-0 win over the New York Red Bulls.


Hernandez Passes Russell on All-Time Starts List
With his start against the Rapids on Saturday, Jason Hernandez moved into sole possession of No. 9 on the Earthquakes’ all-time starts list. The defender has made 92 starts since joining San Jose at the outset of the 2008 campaign, surpassing current Quakes assistant coach and former player Ian Russell.


Dawkins Returns
After missing nearly four weeks due to a hamstring strain, Simon Dawkins returned to the pitch for the Earthquakes on Saturday, Aug. 13 against the Colorado Rapids. He came on as a substitute for Brad Ring in the 70th minute. The last match Dawkins played in was against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on July 20 at Buck Shaw Stadium.


Night Out With the Quakes at The Republic
Earthquakes players and the Shakers will be at The Republic in San Francisco on Sept. 2 at 9:30 p.m. PT serving drinks and interacting with fans. Those in attendance will get to meet the players and enjoy the atmosphere at The Republic until 1 a.m. The Earthquakes will also raffle off free prizes.


Quakes Begin Road Stretch
The Earthquakes will begin a road-heavy stretch that will continue for the remainder of the season. Seven of the Quakes’ final 10 games will be on the road including trips to face LA Galaxy, Toronto FC, Houston Dynamo, Portland Timbers, Colorado Rapids, New England Revolution and Seattle Sounders FC.


Gordon Undergoes Successful Surgery
Forward Alan Gordon underwent successful surgery last week to repair a torn rectus abdominis and tears in his left and right hip adductors. The veteran scored his first goal with the Earthquakes in a 1-1 draw against Portland on Aug. 6 after being brought over in a trade on July 14. Gordon will remain at his home in Southern California before rejoining the Earthquakes to begin the rehabilitation process.


Dayak to Join Doyle, Cerritos in Quakes Hall of Fame
The San Jose Earthquakes announced last week that star defender and member of the 2001 and 2003 MLS Cup champion teams, Troy Dayak, will be inducted to the Earthquakes Hall of Fame. He will first be honored at the Soccer Silicon Valley Community Foundation Dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 19 and the team will honor Dayak and unveil his jersey in the stadium on Saturday, Oct. 22 during a halftime ceremony at the Quakes’ final game of the season against FC Dallas at Buck Shaw Stadium. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT. Dayak ranks No. 7 all-time in minutes played (10,830) and games started (122), and No. 8 all-time in appearances (129). He was also selected to the 2001 MLS All-Star team and was named the 2001 MLS Comeback Player of the Year. He will be the third player inducted to the Earthquakes Hall of Fame alongside current General Manager John Doyle and all-time leading scorer Ronald Cerritos.


Busch the Shot Stopper
Twenty-four games into the season, Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch is tied for second in the league in saves with 87 with New England’s Matt Reis. Toronto FC’s Stefan Frei leads the pack with 97 saves in 25 matches. In third is the Houston Dynamo’s Tally Hall who has 74 saves in 24 games.
