SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes and Wells Fargo have selected 16 youth athletic programs from around the Bay Area to receive funds from the 2011 Goals for Education program.
Earthquakes players will attend ceremonies to dedicate checks to Castro Valley Soccer Club and America SCORES-Bret Harte Elementary in San Francisco. In addition to those two organizations, the list includes: Irvington High School (Fremont), America SCORES-Longfellow Elementary (San Francisco), Rocketship Discovery Prep (San Jose), Santa Teresa Elementary (San Jose), Santa Cruz County FC Revolution (Santa Cruz), Aztecas Soccer Program (Watsonville), Winchester Soccer (San Jose), John Sinnot Elementary (Milpitas), Washington Open (Santa Clara), Golden State Futsal (Alum Rock), Sunnyvale Middle School (Sunnyvale), Metro Pal (San Jose), City Year (San Jose) and St. Francis of Assisi School (Concord).
Castro Valley Soccer Club’s newly purchased goalposts were vandalized beyond repair, causing the cancellation of games to their TOPS (soccer players with special needs) and U8-U10 divisions. The Earthquakes have pledged funds to help replace the goalposts and allow the more than 600-affected kids an opportunity to play a full slate of games next season.
The Bay Area chapter of America SCORES aims to eliminate bullying and violent acts during recess by providing structured, supervised activities. Specifically, the group offers the SCORES Soccer Recess Program as a way of building teamwork and leadership skills among youth. The funds granted to America SCORES-Bret Harte Elementary will go toward on-site support from a SCORES Soccer Coach, training for on-site staff, equipment and the creation of a dedicated space to play pick-up soccer.
Wells Fargo donated $250 to Goals for Education for each of the 40 goals the Earthquakes scored in 2011, raising $10,000 for the first-year program. Recipients were selected by a panel of Earthquakes representatives who judged requests based on overall need, available funds, and the total number of people that would benefit from the donation.
