Philadelphia Union Scouting Report
Philadelphia (2-3-1) held on for a 1-0 victory at Chivas USA on Saturday night despite going down to nine men through two red cards shown over the final 15 minutes. The Union grabbed all three points through Freddy Adu’s unassisted back-heel goal off the left post and in from close range in the 40th minute following some clever work near the right end-line by Michael Farfan, but will be without Keon Daniel and Gabriel Farfan due to red-card suspension when they host the Quakes this Saturday. Philadelphia has produced seven points from its first six games off of just four goals as a team, with two of them coming from Panamian midfielder Gabriel Gomez, currently in his first season with the club. Zac MacMath is in his first year as the Union’s full-time starter in goal, with Philadelphia heading into the weekend on a shutout streak of 332 minutes over three-plus games.

Miscellaneous Notes

Earthquakes Leave it Late but Take Down RSL to Go Tops in West
The Earthquakes scored twice in second-half stoppage time to defeat visiting Real Salt Lake, 3-1, at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday and leapfrog the Claret-and-Cobalt to move into the top perch in the MLS Western Conference. Simon Dawkins nodded on Steven Beitashour’s cross from the right flank into the left corner of the goal as he went to ground in the second minute of stoppage for the decisive strike that put the home crowd into a frenzy on a night which saw Frank Yallop earn his 100th career win as an MLS manager. Just moments later, Khari Stephenson accepted Tressor Moreno’s short corner from the right and deftly lofted a pass with the outside of his right foot. The ball traversed the six-yard box to the back post, where 5-foot-8 teenager Luis Gil was no match for a leaping Chris Wondolowski, the Quakes star heading home past Nick Rimando and assuring the three points and first-place ascension. Stephenson had opened the scoring in first-half stoppage, latching onto another Beitashour cross and skipping his header off the ground and also through Rimando’s save attempt. RSL captain Kyle Beckerman equalized with an individual effort in the 53rd, but the visitors finished the match with only nine men following a pair of red-card ejections in the 29th and 69th minutes.

New Leader in Western Conference
The San Jose Earthquakes took over the top spot in the MLS Western Conference with their 3-1 home triumph over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. The Earthquakes (5-1-1, 16 pts.) now lead second-place RSL (5-3-0, 15 pts.) by one point with a game in hand. RSL plays at West foe FC Dallas this Wednesday night (5:30 p.m. PT), prior to hosting winless Toronto FC on Saturday (6 p.m. PT). Seattle Sounders FC is lurking in fourth-place at 10 points from a 3-1-1 start with two games in hand over San Jose. The Quakes also picked up ground in the race for the 2012 MLS Supporters’ Shield, as Sporting Kansas City (7-1-0, 21 pts.) received its first blemish of the year, 1-0, at the Portland Timbers on Saturday.

Yallop Sixth Manager to Reach 100 MLS Victories
Eighth-year Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop reached the 100-win milestone for his MLS regular-season managerial career with the 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. Yallop, whose career also includes a two-year stint with the LA Galaxy in 2006-07, is now 100-96-70 (.508) as an MLS head coach in regular-season matches. He ranks sixth on the all-time MLS chart in wins, behind Sigi Schmid (160), Bruce Arena (131), Bob Bradley (124), Steve Nicol (112) and former pupil Dominic Kinnear (102).

Hernandez Draws Milestone Start No. 100 for Club
Against Real Salt Lake in front of the home crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium on April 21, veteran Quakes center back Jason Hernandez earned start No. 100 for him in club colors since he joined the Earthquakes prior to their return to MLS for the 2008 season. Hernandez is climbing the all-time club charts, as he is now tied with Eddie Lewis (1996-99) for No. 8 in starts, and up to No. 8 in minutes played (8,937) as well, passing Lewis (8,867). Hernandez made his 100th appearance in an Earthquakes uniform in his 2012 debut when he entered the March 31 match at Seattle at halftime.

Weekend Wrap-Up
All three San Jose goals in Saturday’s match came from headers, from the center of the penalty box (Khari Stephenson), front post (Simon Dawkins) and back post (Chris Wondolowski), all from right-sided crosses … The Quakes are already at 5-1-1 after finishing with just eight wins a year ago, and have five victories before the end of April, having achieved win No. 5 on June 11 in 2011 … The Quakes now lead the Western Conference with 13 goals scored, and are second in MLS behind only NYRB (17) … With the victory, San Jose extended its unbeaten run to five games since its only defeat of 2012 to Houston on March 17, now 4-0-1 since then (the Quakes had a six-game unbeaten run at 4-0-2 from May 11-June 11, 2011) … The Quakes took 14 corner kicks in the contest, to just one by RSL, falling one shy of the single-game club record of 15 set on Aug. 26, 2000, against the LA Galaxy at Spartan Stadium … The goals by Stephenson and Dawkins were their firsts of the season and seventh career strike for each player … Wondolowski’s goal was his league-leading eighth and the first of his career against RSL, with just Houston, Portland and Montreal remaining now in MLS as teams he has not scored against (has yet to face Montreal) … Dawkins’ deciding goal at 90+2 was the club’s latest winner since Wondolowski’s 82nd-minute strike at New England on Oct. 8, 2011 … The two assists by Steven Beitashour give the third-year right back a team-leading four for 2012, moving him into a tie for third in MLS … Beitashour, who led the team with seven helpers a year ago, now has 11 assists in his last 24 appearances … The assists credited to Stephenson and Tressor Moreno on the final goal were the second for each this year … Dawkins’ and Moreno’s starts were the second for each this year … Jason Hernandez made his first start of 2012 … Ike Opara made his first start of 2012 and first MLS start since May 28, 2011, in Chicago … Justin Morrow was the starting left back for the first time this year in the injury absence of captain Ramiro Corrales, after beginning each of the first six contests at center back … Forwards Steven Lenhart and Alan Gordon returned to game action as second-half substitutes after missing the last two and one match, respectively, both due to hamstring injuries … The Quakes’ top pick in this year’s SuperDraft, Sam Garza, made his MLS debut, replacing Rafael Baca on the right wing in the 82nd minute … San Jose’s three goals were the most given up by Real Salt Lake in eight games this season.

Seven-Game Superlatives
At 5-1-1 and 16 points, this is the best seven-game start to a year in the San Jose Earthquakes’ 15-season club history. In 2003, the eventual MLS Cup champion Quakes trotted out to a 4-1-2 start for 14 points. They were 4-2-1 (13 pts.) to begin the 2001, 2002 and 2010 seasons. In 1999, San Jose was 5-2 after seven matches, but picked up just five points through five shootout victories. With just five goals conceded thus far, this is the franchise’s best seven-game defensive start. San Jose allowed seven goals over its first seven matches in both 2002 and 2010. At 2-0-1 for seven points over their first three road dates, the Quakes have equaled their best three-game road start. They were an identical 2-0-1 with seven points following their first three road forays in 2003. San Jose was 2-1 after three road tests in 1999, but with only two points after a pair of shootout triumphs. The Quakes’ 13 goals fall one short of their best seven-game output of 14 from 1998.

Race for the Budweiser Golden Boot
Quakes star Chris Wondolowski closed a second straight week with a share of the lead in the race for the 2012 Budweiser Golden Boot, now at eight goals. He was alone atop the leaderboard momentarily following his stoppage-time clincher against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. New York Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry pulled back even with his 72nd-minute free-kick goal at RFK Stadium on Sunday evening. Wondolowski’s current five-game goal-scoring streak is the longest active run in MLS, and is one off of his own club-record six-gamer that was snapped in Week 2 this season against Houston on March 17. Wondolowski remains the league leader with three game-winning strikes and four road scores. Of his eight goals, Wondolowski has tallied three with his right foot (vs. NE, at SEA, vs. VAN), two with his left foot (at TFC, vs. VAN) and three with his head (at TFC, at NY, vs. RSL).

It’s Wondo’s World…
-Eight goals in first seven games of 2012 (tied for Budweiser Golden Boot lead with Thierry Henry of NYRB)
-Current five-game goal-scoring streak (best active streak in MLS and one shy of tying own club record)
-One goal shy of No. 50 for his MLS career, currently at 49
-Leads MLS for third straight year in game-winning goals with three
-Leads MLS for second straight year in road goals with four
-14 goals over the last 12 games dating back to 2011
-16 goals over the last 16 games (just the 10th player in MLS history with 16 or more goals in 16 games)
-Scored in 13 of the Quakes’ last 16 games
-Scored 14 of the Quakes’ last 22 goals
-Since start of 2010 season, scored 42 of San Jose’s 87 goals, or 48 percent
-Since start of 2010 season, 42 goals in 65 matches equals a per-game average of 0.65
-Since start of 2010 season, tallied winning goal in 17 of the Earthquakes’ 26 victories, or 65 percent
-42 goals since 2010 is 11 more than next closest in MLS during same stretch (Dwayne De Rosario)
-Has most game-winning goals (17) and road goals (21) in all of MLS since start of 2010 season
-Trails only Ronald Cerritos (61) for No. 1 on the all-time San Jose scoring chart with 45
-Club records of 18 game-winners and eight multi-goal performances (tied with Cerritos for latter)
-San Jose is 22-4-9 (.757) all-time in games in which he scores

Best Defensive Start in Club History
Having conceded just five goals in seven games thus far in 2012, the Quakes are off to their best seven-game defensive start in club history. San Jose previously gave up seven goals over its first seven matches to begin the 2002 and 2010 campaigns. The club’s current 0.71 goals-against average is tied with Chivas USA for third-best in MLS behind Sporting KC (0.38) and Seattle (0.40). The Earthquakes have allowed more than one goal in a game just once this season, in a 2-2 draw at New York on April 14. Against Vancouver on April 7, the Quakes finally let in their first goal in open play after 408 minutes to begin the year, or just over four and a half games, as ‘Caps forward Sebastien Le Toux struck in the 49th minute of the Quakes’ 3-1 win at Buck Shaw Stadium. Prior to that score, the only other goal the Quakes had allowed came from a 14th-minute penalty kick by Brad Davis in the 1-0 defeat to Houston at AT&T Park on March 17. San Jose already has three shutouts after producing just one over its final 15 games a year ago. The results at Toronto FC (3-0 on March 24) and Seattle (1-0 on March 31) marked back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since Oct. 2 (0-0 at Columbus) and Oct. 9, 2010 (2-0 at D.C. United).

Sellout Streak Comes to an End
The San Jose Earthquakes saw their club-record streak of eight straight sellouts inside Buck Shaw Stadium come to an end against Real Salt Lake on April 21, with an announced attendance of 10,202. The Quakes had extended their stretch of consecutive sellouts at their regular home venue in Santa Clara with capacity crowds (10,525) on hand for MLS First Kick 2012 against the New England Revolution on March 10 and for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC match on April 7. The streak dated back to San Jose’s game against D.C. United on July 30, 2011, and also included games against Portland on Aug. 6, Colorado on Aug. 13, Chicago on Sept. 10, Sporting Kansas City on Oct. 1 and FC Dallas on Oct. 22. With an added stand on the South End, the attendance for the 2011 season finale with FC Dallas actually rose to 10,744 spectators.

Shea Salinas Undergoes Successful Surgery
Earthquakes winger Shea Salinas underwent successful surgery performed by Dr. Michael Oberlander at Sequoia Surgical Pavilion in Walnut Creek last Wednesday. The procedure was to repair a fractured clavicle suffered late in the first half against the New York Red Bulls on April 14. The 25-year-old Salinas, who started each of San Jose’s first six games this season, is expected to miss 6-8 weeks in recovery.

Wells Fargo Goals for Education
Wells Fargo has again pledged to donate $250 for each goal the Earthquakes score in 2012 through the Goals for Education program. With 13 goals through seven games, the donated total for this season currently stands at $3,250. Thanks to 40 goals in 2011, the partnership raised $10,000 for local youth soccer and athletic development programs a year ago. After fielding dozens of applications, the Earthquakes and Wells Fargo awarded 16 grants to deserving organizations, and with Quakes midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong on hand, made special check presentations at America SCORES Bay Area and Castro Valley Soccer Club in January.

Earthquakes, Wondolowski Support Street Soccer USA
Two-time MLS leading goal-scorer Chris Wondolowski and Street Soccer USA, a non-profit organization that seeks to end homelessness through sports, have partnered to make a difference in the lives of the homeless in the Bay Area through the “One Goal at a Time” campaign. For every goal Wondolowski scores during the 2012 season, the Quakes star has pledged a $100 donation to Street Soccer USA (SSUSA), and is asking fans to join in his mission. Additionally, the Earthquakes Community Fund will match Wondolowski’s donations. Wondolowski, who has been a national ambassador for SSUSA since August of 2011, got an early start on his 2012 scoring account with a strike in San Jose’s season opener on March 10, and now has a league-leading eight goals already through just seven contests.
