SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski was named Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 29 of the 2012 MLS season.
Wondolowski continued his pursuit of Roy Lassiter’s single-season goals record (27 goals in 1996) by adding three more to his 2012 tally, bringing his running total to 22. He began the week with a brace off the bench, rallying the Earthquakes from a 2-0 deficit against the visiting Portland Timbers in midweek action at Buck Shaw Stadium. Next up, the Danville native notched his MLS-record 10th game winner of the season with a 30th minute redirect of a Victor Bernardez shot at CenturyLink Field on Saturday. The goal sent San Jose past Seattle 2-1 to complete a season sweep of Sounders FC.
With four games remaining, Wondolowski holds an eight-goal advantage in the Budweiser Golden Boot race. The Volkswagen MVP candidate also has a career-high seven assists.
Wondolowski has now won three MLS Player of the Week awards this season and five in his career. He also took home the NASR award in Weeks 9 and 19.
